Weekly Pick Em: Beanpot Edition

I continue to hold on to a slight lead over FM but that could all change in one week. GW, once again, had the best week and starting his comeback trail from his horrendous first half. I don't know if he has it in him to complete the comeback though. This week should be a good one with Beanpot starting up on Monday(those picks probably are NSFW)

QQ 83-70(.545) 5-5
FM 75-67 (.538) 4-6
HS 70-69(.504) 4-6
MWW 75-74(.503) 3-7
GW 54-70 (.435) 6-4
Ray 25-24(.510)

Friday 2/1

BU @ UMass

QQ- BU 4-2- This would be an easy game to overlook if the conference wasn't so tightly packed right now. This game is huge for BU and I think they rise to the occasion like they did versus PC last weekend.
FM- BU 3-2- Trap game, but UMass isn't good enough to capitalize.  Ryan Ruikka vindicates Coach Parker with a hat trick.  Everyone's brain explodes.
HS - BU 4-2 - UMass probably hasn't pickled away the memory of BU's last visit to Mullins, and so will play us strong at home with the final stretch of the season looming. The Terriers will be mentally prepared though, and will put in a 60-minute effort. This score prediction may or may not include an empty-netter (it'll be a closer game than MWW thinks).
MWW- BU 8-0- Mass isn't that great at home this year compared to other years. BU away record is solid with 3 games over .500.
GW- BU 3-1 UMass' lone goal comes from Fight Mass throwing trash on the ice in protest of UMass' shitty play up to that point. The ref, being blind, mistakes a hamburger for a puck and signals goal. Video evidence is inconclusive.

PC@Maine

QQ- PC 3-2- Maine is hot but they also are winless at home this year. I'm not buying the Black Bears yet.
FM- PC 4-1- Maine regresses now that they're playing a team with more than 3 healthy defensemen and no pirates behind the bench
HS - Maine 4-3 (OT) - I have no idea what's going on (with Maine). I'm picking them mostly on the off-chance that I can make up some ground on QQ this weekend.
MWW- Maine 3-2- after last weekend I really don't know who to pick. Am taking Maine based on the fact they are playing well since the the 2nd half started
GW- PC 5-4. I'm big on PC this year, I think they've got a chance to make a little run in the Hockey East playoffs if Gillies stays sharp

Lowell @ Merrimack

QQ- Merrimack 4-3- Battle of the valley goes to the Warriors because they're at home and I'm sick of everyone going on and on about Lowell.
FM- Lowell 5-1- Despite what I expected, the Whatsas are turning it around.  Merrimack falls further behind the Friars
HS - Lowell 3-1 - The Riverhawks' unbeaten streak continues at the most high-school-y rink in HEA.
MWW- Lol 3-1-LoL has been the best team since the 2nd half started in Hockey East. They are playing away and are road warriors this year.
GW- Lowell 3-2 UMass LOL continues their hot streak against an overmatched Merrimack team

Amherst Preview

Photo credit: Boston Globe(they still suck)

The Terriers travel to good ole' Amherst,MA on Friday to continue their Hockey East schedule against the UMass Minutemen. UMass currently sits 7th in HE with a 6-9-1 conference record. They are 9-12-2 overall but have some impressive wins @ BC and home against UNH. They are a dangerous team and it is always tough to take all 3 games against a conference opponent. BU swept the home and home back in October by scores of 5-2 and 3-2. The Minutemen are lead by junior forwards Connor Sheary(5-12-17) and Brendan Gracel(11-11-22) along with classmate Mike Pereira (6-8-14).. They have won 2 of their last 3 and are riding the hot hand of sophomore goalie Steve Mastalerz who has started the last 3 games and has given up no more than 3 goals in each of those games.

Weekend Recap- 3 out of 4 ain't bad

The BU Terriers took 3 of 4 points from the Providence Friars this past weekend with a road won Friday night and hard-fought tie Saturday night. I'll start with Friday night where the Terriers put themselves in a quick 2-0 hole due to defensive breakdowns that left Sean Maguire hanging. They hung in there and grabbed a goal late in the first on an Evan Rodrigues wrister that beat PC goalie Jon Gillies low. This was the turning point of the game for BU as they entered the first intermission. Rodrigues would strike again in the second to tie the game 2-2 on a backhand that slipped through Gillies somehow. Rodrigues was falling down as he shot which set up for an awesome celly that you can't see on the highlights. He was basically sliding on his stomach fist pumping to the boards. The Terriers had a scary moment in the third as Rodrigues went down a check into the boards and left the game. Coach Parker said after the game that his hand may be broken but it turned out to be badly bruised and I would expect Rodrigues to return to the lineup either Friday @ UMass or Monday for the Beanpot vs Northeastern. BU picked up the intensity after the hit and Sahir Gill scored the game-winner on a slick back-handed wrap around goal.  The 3-2 final was a big win for the Terriers, who were tied with PC in Hockey East for 3rd entering the weekend.

BU @ PC

QQ- BU 4-2- Big weekend for the Terriers with two must win games. I think they are going to take care of business. They need this game more than PC does.
FM- BU 5-1- Friars are still HEA's ultimate slumpbuster
MWW- BU 8-0- Prov Priest ***********(Translation: They are very nice people)
HS- BU 4-2- Bounceback weekend for the boys, who sweep the Friars to regain their foothold on the ladder to the top of the HEA.
GW- BU 5-2. Fuck Gillies

Maine @ BC

QQ- BC 4-1- Everything in my body goes against picking BC but Maine is just horrid.
FM-  BC 27-0- I'm not kidding, I think that might actually end up being the final score
MWW- NCC 4-0- why on earth would I pick Maine at Conte
HS- NCC 5-3- It's still Maine, and it's still NCC.
GW- Maine 3-2. Fuck all of you guys

FM- Lowell 4-2- Only if Doug Carr misses the cut and gets sent home from the World Junior Diving Championship team

Weekend Preview- Time to bundle some Friars

The 12-9 BU Terriers face off with 10-9-3 PC Friars this weekend in a home and home series. Friday night's game will be held at Schneider Arena in Providence and Saturday night will be back in Boston at Agganis Arena. The Terriers took the first game this year back in October. It was a 4-2 win at Agganis Arena. The Friars are currently tied with BU for 3rd in the conference with 18 pts in 15 games played. The Friars are 3-1 in their last 4 since goalie Jon Gillies returned from his stint with team USA in the WJC. That lone loss was a 2-1 loss at Lowell where Gillies played absurdly well. He is certainly living up to the hype he had as a recruit with his .930 save % and 2.12 GAA.  PC is lead by junior(and member of my fantasy team-though he will be benched this weekend) Derek Army. He has a solid 10-7-17 line in 22 GP. Ross Maureman and Shane Luke are also threats to score. The BU defense will also need to keep an eye on freshman Mark Jankowski who is a skilled forward that has been fighting through some injuries so far this year. PC doesn't have a ton of skilled guys up front but they know how to grind and score goals. They typically win in low scoring games with Gillies and captain dman Myles Harvey being the backbone of their defense.

Bracketology

It is the time of year where everyone starts to look at all the possible draws for their respective teams in the NCAA tournament in March/April. The tournament begins at 4 regional sites March 29-31 and then moves to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh on April 9-11. The seeding is based entirely on the Pairwise rankings which fluctuate like crazy based on each game. I am going to break down the current rankings and take a wild guess at what I think they will look like to end the year. My first shot I took on twitter had BU, Western Michigan, Notre Dame and Quinnipiac in the Frozen Four. I am going to stray from that slightly based on how my projected bracket turns out. I was 3/4 two years ago in 2011. Last year, I'm just going to pretend didn't happen.

Current Pairwise

1. Quinnipiac(ECAC)
2. Minnesota(WCHA)
3. BC(HE)
4. UNH(HE)
5. Yale(ECAC)
6. North Dakota(WCHA)
7. Lowell(HE)
8. Miami(CCHA)
9t. Dartmouth(ECAC)
9t. Notre Dame(CCHA)
11. Denver(WCHA)
12.Western Michigan(CCHA)
13. BU(HE)
14. St. Cloud State(WCHA)
15t. Minnesota St(WCHA)
15t Northern Michigan
17. Niagara(Atlantic)
17. Alaska
19t Nebraska Omaha
19t Cornell

Meme Monday: Whiskey Rivers...

...are what the BSRS rode this weekend.  As such, the volume of work for this week's post is down from last week, but the quality is still there (probably).  We've got new memes, some refurbished old memes, and a taste of Bill the Bag...

We're going to start this week off with some Hey Girl memes, courtesy of OC

Weekend in Review: Heartbreak City

Apologies on how late this recap is - it's just been a crazy weekend here for BSRS. QQ and FM (and myself, really) are deep in mourning over the Pats loss, HTS is frantically searching google maps for the nearest bridge to jump off of following the Rags 0-2 start, and Mr. Worldwide is busy deluding himself that the Islanders have a chance to go over .500 this year.

Anyways, I'm sure by now that you've all either seen or heard about BU's pair of one goal losses over the weekend.  The Huskies of Northeastern took down the Terriers 6-5 on Friday in a wild contest, and the Lowell Riverhawks thwarted BU's comeback attempts to prevail 4-3 on Saturday.

MWW 70-60(.538) 4-5

Friday 1/18

Merrimack @ Maine

QQ- Merrimack 4-2- Merrimack is coming off a 6-0 trouncing of the Black Bears at home. I see this being a closer game but still no dice for Maine.
FM- Merrimack 3-2- unfortunately Mercyhurst only comes to Orono once a year.
MWW- Merrimack 4-2- Bigos & Diamond will both get majors called on them but Merri wins almost by default
HS - Merrimack 3-2 - Hack bent the Black Bears over the boards at Lawler in their last meeting but won't have such an easy game this time. It is Orono, after all. But Maine still can't get their legs under them and may not find consistency at all this season.
GW - Merrimack 3-1- These teams both suck

NU @ BU

QQ- BU 3-2- BU and NU always play close games no matter how crappy NU may play at times this year. They have some decent forwards and if(huge IF) Rawlings shows up, they can be tough to beat.
FM- BU 4-1- Terriers dominate the throwback throwdown, officially make the Rhett head jerseys a regular like BC did with the urine colored Rangers knockoffs last year, wearing them as they celebrate a Frozen Four championship
MWW- BU 8-0- red n black, red n black NU girls got the clap!
HS - BU 9-0 - Price is right rules and all that, I'm one-upping MWW. Vinny Sap will get checked into glass and shatter it again, but with his head this time instead of his skate. Also, I am going to wear the giveaway jersey every day for the rest of my life and then at my funeral.
GW - BU 4-0- Please God let Vinny eat shit on the ice

Weekend Preview: Time to Take out the Trash

This weekend the BU Terriers play host to two conference foes that are heading in two different directions. Friday night, they will host the 6-10-2 Northeastern Huskies. NU has had an up and down(well mostly down) year thus far. They began the season 2-0 with wins over Merrimack and BC at home. Their only other conference win since opening weekend was a 1-0 victory over UMass. They are coming off a tie of Maine who then lost 6-0 to Merrimack the next night. NU is a  trap game at home for the Terriers but hopefully this team learned its lesson from the Harvard game last week. NU always bring their best for BU because they have decided that BU is their "rival". It is a one way rivalry but we will save that for another day. This game is one that would be easy to overlook but should also give the team a good idea what to expect come Beanpot time in 3 weeks when nothing is easy. NU's MO is to lose to Atlantic Hockey teams at home(Bentley this year) and then knock off a top 10 team. They have already beaten BC and they could do the same on Friday to BU. That being said, I think BU will win a close one.

Meme Mondays: LOL Edition

Happy new year Terrier fans! Here's hoping you all had a great winter break. Classes resume this week but we've already had the opportunity to watch some great (and some not so great) college hockey. But this time is as good as any to welcome back a fan favorite feature of BSRS, Meme Mondays! Much thanks to the rest of BSRS in planning this edition while I was being run ragged at work.

This weekend, your Terriers will host back-to-back games against the Husky ladies from NorthLeastern and the What's-A-Riverhawks from Lowell. Considering the well-documented evidence against the relevance of Northeastern's hockey program and the pathetic state of their student support...

Not pictured: the legendary NU Truffle Shuffle
...this post is mainly going to focus on the asshole of the Hockey East: UMass LOL.

BU pounds Merrimack

The BU Terriers got back on track Friday night against the Merrimack Warriors with a 4-1 victory.  The Terriers were coming off one of their worst games of the year after blowing a 3 goal lead to Harvard on Wednesday night. The team seemed to learn from it though and got back on track defensively against Merrimack to pick up two more points in the league. The scoring was started by captain Wade Megan who snuck a deflected wrister top shelf on Merrimack goalie Rasmus Tirronen (I believe that is Finnish for " Not as good as Oksanen"). The goal came short handed and was a great individual effort by the captain in the first. BU could not score for the rest of the period as both Matt Nieto and Ahti Oksanen hit the right post with separate shots and Danny O'Regan just missed an open net off a great slap pass from Alexx Privitera.

The Terriers continued to push in the second and got a goal off a Sahir Gill redirect from another great pass from Privitera. Tirronen never had a chance on the play and BU continued to push from there as Cason Hohmann added another off a great saucer pass from Wade Megan. Hohmann would finish the game a nation's best +20 for the year. Matt Nieto picked up his 5th goal of the year in the third and has now scored in two straight which isn't good for the rest of the league because he can put up a lot of points fast if he gets hot. Merrimack goon Kyle Bigos scored later in the third to ruin Sean Maguire's shutout bid. He would then promptly break the HE all-time record for penalty minutes after he got beat up by Sam Kurker in a scrum. Kurker dominated him and it was awesome. It seemed like Maguire felt he was interfered with on the Bigos goal but I couldn't see the play that well considering I had one of the worst seats in the arena. It was an overall thorough effort and big win for the Terriers' confidence going forward. Maguire has now won 5 starts in a row and seems to be the hotter goaltender. It will be interesting to see how Coach Parker handles the rotation this coming weekend as BU has two home games with Northeastern and Lowell coming to Agganis.

BSRS 3 Stars of the Game

1. Wade Megan (1-1-2, +2)
2. Sean Maguire (1GA, 37 saves)
3. Cason Hohmann( 1-1-2, +2)

League Wide Predictions

This is gonna be an awesome season. One reason to love the shortened season is how competitive it will be. This season is going to pack a lot of living in half the time it usually has. It just makes every win that much more important. Another thing to consider is the older guys - Jagr, Selanne, Alfredsson - who are coming back to play. A shortened season is gonna be good for these guys in the sense that they don't have as many games to get fatigued, and should be fresher come playoff time.

So for all of you whose heads are still in NCAA mode, I'll break down each division and what to expect from them.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division
Barring any unfortunate series of crippling injuries, the New York Rangers will be the force of the Atlantic. With a first line of Nash-Gaborik-Richards, and the Vezina winner between the pipes, it's clear to me that the Rangers are going to be the team to watch. Pittsburgh is the only other team in the Atlantic that has Cup potential. Crosby looks to be healthy, and Malkin is..well...Malkin. The only place where I see shakiness is in net. Fleury had a playoff to forget. With the acquisition of Vokoun, I see mistrust is Fleury. Offensively, they'll be fine. New Jersey and Philadelphia will be pests, but in the end I don't see them having the playoff-worthy seasons they had last year. NJ lost Parise, and are all getting old. Philadelphia lost the Shea Weber sweepstakes, but have promise in Giroux, and are expecting huge things out of Jakub Voarcek. Bryzgalov could be a buyout candidate, but I guarantee they give him at least one more season before calling it quits on the Spaceman. The New Yo- I mean Brooklyn Islanders will not even make a splash this year. Visnovsky literally would rather stay in the KHL than come back to the Isles. Pull a Columbus move and trade away your team and start fresh.

What To Expect

With that hellish embarrassment of a labor stoppage over, it's time to kick back and enjoy the greatest sport on its professional level. I'm here to break down the Bruins and show what you can expect from them.

The Bruins were surprisingly quiet this offseason as far as roster moves go. Picking up Christian Hanson, Garnet Exelby and Aaron Johnson from free agency, and acquiring Michael Ouellet from Tampa in the Pouliot deal, they hardly made any big splashes. I know before the lockout started, Phoenix and Boston were in talks to trade Krejci for Keith Yandle (In my opinion, that's a great deal, but I'll leave trade speculation for another day.)

So let's break down what you can expect this year:

RPI Recap- BU hockey- refusing to tie since 2011

The BU hockey team played their first overtime contest of the season on Friday night against Rennselear Polytechnical Institute and came out victorious 3-2 on a Cason Hohmann goal.  Freshman Sean Maguire won his 4th start in a row and improved to 4-2 on the season and 3-0 at Agganis Arena. Coach Parker was less than thrilled with the effort through the first 2 periods as BU trailed 1-0 in the first before tying it up on a Ryan Santana goal. The goal was a result of a good drive to the net by Mike Moran  who picked up his first collegiate point with the assist. Senior Jake Moscatel also drove to the net creating the greasy chance for Santana. It was a huge goal to keep the team in the game at the time. The 3rd and 4th lines played very nicely to keep the team in the game during the first two periods. Moscatel saw his first game action as a Terrier due to an injury to captain left wing Wade Megan. RPI scored the lone goal in the second as they continued to outplay the Terriers The first two period the team played like they did in the 6-0 loss to Denver.

Post-Lockout NHL Season Predictions

Lockout over, which means your NHL guy is back. Okay, even last year I didn’t write much. Whatever. I'm sorry.

Here are my predictions for each team this year. Take them lightly please.

·         Anaheim – Disney re-acquires Anaheim, names them the Anaheim Kung-Fu Pandas. Selanne quits. Bruce Boudreau looks like a panda.
·         Boston – Bruins sign four more players over the age of 37, makes them all captains. Warsofsky gets called up and scores 74 goals.
·         Buffalo – Ryan Miller gets mad because a Lucic shot a puck at him during a game. Lindy Ruff thinks everything’s a joke. Rick Jeanneret yells a lot.
·         Calgary – who?
·         Carolina – Hurricane’s front office (Mr. and Mrs. Staal) aggressively make offers to NY to get Marc Staal. Semin scores 1 goal all year, but is still named Alternate captain.
·         Chicago – Per CBA rules, the Blackhawks must trade away more of their enforcers. Kane assumes role of enforcer. Dies. Toews is still very Swedish.
·         Colorado – players get too lazy because of the Marijuana laws in Colorado. 0-50 on the season, but concession sales have never been higher.
·         Columbus – Columbus finishes last, but doesn’t get the first round pick. Due to a labor stoppage, they lose the All-Star game, and their top draft pick has season-ending surgery. Oh wait that seems familiar…
·         Dallas – in an effort to rebuild, the Stars lure Lindros and Hull out of retirement. The Hull-Lindros-Jagr line combines for 3 broken hips and 19 concussions. Star’s GM Nieuwendyk apologizes to fans for a 1-49-0 season. Fires self.

BSRS Regulation Challenge Take 2

As many of you already know from Take 1,we took advantage of some company's screen printing sale and got some BSRS t-shirts for cheap. We decided we are going to give one away for a little competition. Take 1 was 12/8 against Maine and 0 people predicted the 1-0 BU win or Garrett Noonan with the first and only goal. No love for Noons last time which was a little surprising considering how large his fan club is.  Let's give this another try. Same deal as last time.  We are going to use regulation because BU hockey doesn't go to overtime this year (only team in Hockey East). For Friday's game against RPI(Rensselear Polytech Institute-not the computer rankings), you must predict the correct score of the game. You also must submit which player will score the first BU goal as a tiebreaker. All entries must be submitted to our twitter account(@bsrs_blog) or emailed to us at baystateroadsports@gmail.com. If we have multiple winners, then we'll give away multiple shirts or find some other way to break the tie.  It close at 7:30 p.m. eastern time on Friday night. Don't be a loser and tweet at us from 3 different accounts to help your odds. Also, we realize about 4 people are going to enter but we think the shirts are awesome and so should you. BC fans are ineligible to enter because they suck. Maybe someone could mix in a correct guess this time, eh?

MWW's Story Time: Backside Attack

The year was 2009-10 season. The Baystate Road Sports crew and friends were going on one of the best road trips of the year: Conte Forum.

From the beginning: during Christmas break GW and QQ sent out an email about buying tickets to BU vs BC at the end of January. We all agreed and one of them bought the tickets. It was our first Newton-BU BSRS road game together (first ever was against NU at Matthews earlier that season).

We all made multiple 'Gatorades' with the simple formula of 4 out, 4 in, non shaken. As we left the original home of the blog, a few of us decided to take a different route to Newton to avoid unnecessary and the usual stuffed sausage feeling on the B line heading to Newton. So we walked to South Campus and decided on taking the D Line from Fenway. When we got off the uneventful T ride, we ended up in the middle of nowhere. Accordingly, the person who thought of the plan said we just had to trespass through a country club and we'll be at the Outhouse on the Hill in no time. Amazingly we were all smart and decided to walk an extra few minutes to get to Newton without doing something illegal.

As we took our first steps in the most unholiest place in the New England area, we all realized that we were lost. None of us knew anything about the campus. We all had a general idea where it was and proceeded to walk that way. As we continue our walk, a statue emerged and seemed like a great place to take a piss. Luckily (or unluckily) a Newton employee stopped us before we attempted and asked us why we were here and do we know where we are going since we didn't fit in since we were all in our Scarlett and White and looked confused (everyone got hockey jerseys for the holidays). He happily gave us directions and we again went along our merry way.

Next, we emerged on a random field and saw the disgusting forum in our sights. We decided to start the chants. On the other side of the field was a bunch of SuperFrauds that decided to try and out chant us. Therefore it seemed like a logical time and place to curse uncontrollably at them. And out of the dark night came the ACC 2nd team running back from Newton. He wasn't so happy about my yelling and said that he will kill me and the usual Sucks to BU. Obviously, I said bring it on (macho man here). Before any possible punches, ropes, shirts were used, one of the crew (pretty sure it was QuackQuack) came in and broke up the verbal argument. After the fight, we took a random flight of stairs to the forum and knew that we needed to backside attack the place since that's where the seats were. As soon as we saw the fuzz, we all finished our 'Gatorades' (some on their second, some were not). We entered the building much to the displeasure of the Newton fans.

We all decided that we need to stick together cause 'Gatorade' does a number on you. As we watched the game in the forum that was built for basketball but now for hockey & basketball. Some of us decided to directly and indirectly do certain things that could've gotten us into another fight either verbal or nonverbal. By good fortune, nothing came out of it. As the game went along, it went into OT and won by Colby Cohen.

Since the game gave us sometime to recollect our thoughts from the 'Gatorade', we decided not to go long way again and just follow the masses to the stop for the BOSTON UNIVERSITY LINE. As we left the building we were obviously high on the win and started yelling at random people and anyone that gave us good material to us against them. I remember most of the comments but none should be spoken about since I do not want offend any of our readers. The rest of the trip went off without a hitch and we got home safely.
