There will most likely be 3-4 current or incoming BU prospects drafted. Rising sophomore Brady Tkachuk(top 5) along with incoming freshmen Joel Farabee(1st), Jake Wise(late 1st-3rd), and Jack DeBoer(late rounds) all look to have their named called this weekend. The first round takes place tonight with rounds 2-7 taking place tomorrow beginning at 11am which is great for all of us but sucks for the first pick of the second round as the atmosphere goes from late on Friday night in front of a packed house to your immediate family and the representatives from each of the teams. For more information on the draft I suggest going to a knowledgeable blog. For a great NHL draft drinking game, please read on.
The win is most definitely a sign of things to come as BU's remaining opponents consist of the Beanpot and, Arizona State(x2) the bottom five teams in Hockey East. The softer schedule along with a young team getting better should be a recipe for success in the second half for the Terriers who have little room for error the rest of the way if they want to make the NCAA tournament come March.

The Terriers have begun to play the way they they are capable of late with increased contributions from Cam Crotty, Kasper Kotkansalo(Finland World Junior team), Drew Melanson, Brady Tkahcuk and Logan Cockerill among others. They will need continued improvement from them along with Jake Oettinger(save percentage down 25 points from last season) in net in order to make the second half surge for some hardware.

quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-54986097656851436552017-10-22T14:28:00.000-04:002017-10-22T14:31:52.544-04:00Terriers take 3 of 4 points from UconnThe BU Terriers bounced back this weekend after getting swept last by Minnesota State last weekend at Agganis Arena. Friday night UConn battled to a 2-2 tie while the Terriers flew to a 6-3 victory yesterday.

The story of the weekend was Bobo Carpenter as he scored 5 of the Terriers 8 goals on the weekend with two being shorthanded on Friday and then three yesterday being on the powerplay. Carpenter stepped up this weekend taking over the goal scoring role that Patrick Harper and Shane Bowers had been carrying through the first four games. He now leads the Terriers with Harper with 8 points in their first 6 games. Jordan Greenway(2 assists) and Pat Curry(2 goals) also a big day yesterday for the Terriers. Curry showed off some of his scoring ability to reward Coach Quinn for his promotion into a top 6 forward role.

UConn definitely does not have as much skill as years past but this is the most points BU has gotten from them in a series since they joined HE. The Terriers also took three points in 2014-2015 from UConn. It would have been nice to take all four points from UConn who is most likely heading for another finish in the bottom half of Hockey East but if you take 3 points from each opponent in the league. You would also be undefeated in the league which is not bad I guess.
In other big news in Hockey East, BC coach Jerry York set the all time record for most losses in collegiate hockey history this weekend as the pigeons from Newton got swept at St. Cloud State. For all the recognition York got for breaking the all time win record a few years ago, there has been silence from the Heights about his newest record. When your coach becomes the biggest loser in history, I feel like you should acknowledge it. Hopefully BU will recognize Coach York and his great accomplishment when he visits Agganis later this year. It's the right thing to do. He passed former Michigan State coach Rick Comley with the loss on Friday and now stands at 618 career losses. I would like to personally congratulate Coach York on his great accomplishment. See who says BU fans can't recognize BC's records.

In the rest of the league, no one did anything all that exciting. Lowell swept St. Lawrence and Clarkson while PC split with the same teams while giving up way too many goals(10 in 2 games). UNH and Northeastern both came back to earth like everyone expected while Maine continues to play some high scoring games with below average out of conference teams.

BU returns to action next weekend with games hosting defending national champs Denver who are overrated and BU should beat easily and then a tough road game at Providence on Saturday. Denver is coming off a tie and win against Lake Superior State last weekend as they come east to face BU and BC on Friday and Saturday night.quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-49653554042076921632017-10-12T00:30:00.000-04:002017-10-12T00:36:32.745-04:00Terriers open the season with 2 EZAC victoriesThe 2017-2018 BU Terriers started off the season on the right start as they defeated the Union Dutchmen and Quinnipiac Bobcats by 5-2 and 3-2 scores respectively. The highlights for both games are posted below but the story of the season so far has been the strong play from sophomore Patrick Harper who has four goals in two games while freshman Shane Bowers has a goal per game including the OT game winner this past Sunday versus Quinnipiac.

There are plenty of positives from both these victories for the Terriers:
1. They are a young team that went 2-0 to start the year against good teams- Yeah yeah I know everyone talks about how young BU is every year but this is the first time since 2014-2015 season that the Terriers have started 2-0 and I would rather be a young 2-0 team that is already finding ways to win than an old team that is already finding ways to lose(sup Lowell fans?)

2. Patrick Harper is very good- The scoring distribution obviously needs to even out as Harper probably cannot score 70 goals in a season but him being so dynamic early on is a great sign that he can be the jumpstart up front when BU needs goals. Greenway, Carpenter, Tkachuk, Crone and Co are going to get their goals and when they do BU is going to be tougher to beat than they already are

3. Oettinger has been only okay(by his standards) and is still a top 5 goalie in the country- Watching the first two games for BU, I would say sophomore goalie Jake Oettinger has been pretty good but not great by his standards. The first goal versus Quinnipiac was from a bad angle and one he wants back I'm sure. The second was from fairly far out with little traffic that he probably makes a save on 75% of the time. Then you look at his stats and he has a .946 save percentage which is probably not sustainable and you remember how lucky you are as a fan of a team with a goalie of this caliber. Also helps you appreciate how good BU has been so far at controlling the game and limiting quality chances.

4. The rest of the league sucks this year- Yeah its early but Lowell got swept by UNH which is embarrassing and no other teams have any victories of note. PC beat an okay Miami team and BC tied Quinnipiac. Northeastern beating a pathetic Sacred Heart team will have 0 impact on how their season turns out.

5. Staying out of the box- The Terriers have found a way to be on the right side of the penalties so far while still playing physical hockey. This will be the key to the season. The ability to stay out of the box while still getting to the net will be key. Jordan Greenway has been his usual beast self down low and drawing plenty of after the whistle attention from opponents who can't stop him so they try to draw matching penalties. The refs should do more to protect him as opposition basically have been given the right to just go at him so far with no risk of a penalty but you know who is going to the box as soon as he hits them back and they crumble to the ice like they just tore their ACL.

The Terriers return to action this weekend against Minnesota State which will be another matchup against an older team that the Terriers will need to continue to grow to beat
This will be a great way for the Terriers to see how they stack up early in the season as they play two quality ECAC teams with an exhibition game in between the next two weekends.
The Terriers bring in 9 freshmen to this year's team highlighted by future first round pick Brady Tkachuk and this year's first round pick Shane Bowers as well as NHL draft picks Kasper Kotkansalo, David Farrance and Cam Crotty on defense. Ultimately, this team will go as far as the returning players take it. Captain Brandon Hickey should have a great senior year on defense with Bobo Carpenter, Patrick Harper and Jordan Greenway pacing the top 6 forwards with Jake Oettinger being a stud in net. Union returns a 41 point scorer in Sebastian Vidmar but the Dutchmen have some of their own holes to fill left by Mike Vecchione and Spencer Foo. Official prediction is a 3-2 BU victory.
Sure the conference had plenty of great players but the real stars on the ice once again were the people everyone pays to come see, the officials. Now I don't mean to be too rude to the refs since I scream at them enough during the season from my seat but pointing out trends of incompetence is one of my favorite summer activities hence why you have the 4th annual ref corsi post(last year's post).

Hockey East had an average of 24.69 penalty minutes called in games which were called by Hockey East officials last year(excluding the NCAA tournament). This is up 2.09 minutes/game from 2015-2016 numbers and up 4.5 minutes per game from the 2014-2015 season. The disparity between penalties called on BU and their opponents has also increased in each of the last three years as BU was called for 23 more penalty minutes than their opponents in 2014-2015, 39 in 2015-2016 and 54 in 2016-2017. I don't want to say this is all on the officials(only like 97% Koharski's fault). Some of it does fall on Kieffer Bellows trying to take every possible stick penalty there is in the rule book for the first half of last season. Maybe this disparity is because the refs don't like this post in which case I guess this is all my fault. Without further ado here are the rankings:

*Only referees who called 10 or more games were counted in these rankings

1. Thomas Quinn- 28.92 pms/game +11.7pms/game- Now most BU fans are used to having a guy named Quinn being #1 in their hearts but this isn't a situation where being at the top is a good thing. This was a bad year for Quinny. Some might say the 13-14 BU team of reffing seasons. Fun fact about Quinn though is he called the exact same number of games this year as last year(13).
2. Tim Benedetto- 26.12 pms/game +2.4- Old friend Timmy enjoys another year in the top 10 of penalty minutes called. After years of watching him calls games, I am starting to feel for him. I think he just always get games with the whistle happy guys *cough Shea and Hansen cough*
3. Jack Millea- 25.65 pms/game +3.0- Jack is the workhorse of HE officials. Doing over 31 games this past year after doing 27 last year. The real question is the rise in penalty minutes called a concerning trend or just a one year fluke of working with the donkey refs in the league(see more on the donkeys below)
4. Kevin Shea- 25.64 pms/game +4.9- Last year I actually said something nice about one of my archrivals KShea and this is how he repays me. The only explanation for this is that I didn't yell at him enough this past season to keep him honest. This will be corrected this coming year as a favor to him and all HE fans.
5. Jamie Koharski- 25.64 pms/game +3.8- The son of a NHL ref actually had a pretty good year outside of the 3-4 BU games he did in the second half of the season. For whatever reason, he called everything and anything against BU to the point the crowd was full on booing him on and off the ice(not just me). Very sad to see this happen to a guy with a family pedigree in refereeing. Some are now questioning whether he still has it.
6. Scott Hansen- 25.56 pms/game +3.8- Hansen is the one ref in the league to give Quinn a penalty that I can remember over the last few season so he automatically sucks.
7. Geoff Miller- 25.46 pms/game -2.0- For all the crap I give Miller on Twitter, he actually had one of the biggest drops in penalty minutes called this past season. Congrats to Miller to responding to constructive criticism the right way.

8. Thomas Fryer- 25.25 pms/game +3.1- Fryer's penalty minutes called may gone up but he still goes down as the ref with the coolest last name
9. Chris Federico- 25.19 pms/game +10.0- The second biggest jump in the field goes to a middle of the pack guy as he had the fewest penalty minutes called of any HE ref last season so he had nowhere to go but up(not good in this case)
10. Michael Baker- 24.5 pms/game -3.6- The 2nd biggest drop in the league goes to the Bake man himself as his high numbers dropped over 13% from last season to this one.
11. Terrence Murphy- 23.88 pms/game - 4.6- Murph is another ref who brought the A+ effort in trying to improve this year
t12. Tim Low- 23.58 pms/game + 2.5- T Low has easily got the most swagga in the league for all refs. Something about watching him coming bopping to the music out of the tunnel is hilarious and he is always in the bottom half of pms called so its a win win.
t12. Andy O'Brien- 23.58 pms.game +8.4- OB is one of the best in the business since he stays out of the way. The large increase in penalties called is still a red flag to me though. Hopefully he isn't getting too cocky out there.
14. John Gravalese- 23.1 pms/game -0.7- Grav is basically a living legend at this point. I used to hate him but he has grown on me as he has gotten older
15. Jeff Bunyon- 22.7 pms/game + 5.4- Bunyon is a real enigma out there. To see him down towards the bottom of penalty minutes called two years in a row is baffling since it is the same guy who threw out Coach Parker in 2012 when he was nothing but polite to him.
16. Stephen McInchak- 21.57 pms/game N/A- His first year in the rankings since he usually doesn't call enough games to qualify.
17. Peter Schliddernhart- 21.45 pms/game -3.9- Schliddernhart was the second most improved this past season and should be recognized for it. Give the man a cookie
18. Kevin Keenan- 20.44 pms/game - 2.5- KK is the king of Hockey East refs this year. He is the Jack Eichel of the reffing world now. People will be showing up in droves for games that he is calling and going "damn there goes Kevin Keenan defending BSRS ref corsi champion".

**shoutout to Cam Voss who may not be calling HE games anymore but is not forgotten #2015BeanpotFinal
Rising sophomore goalie Jake Oettinger, who will probably get robbed of the Richter this year because dumb people love Joe Woll even though Oettinger is the better goalie in every statistical category, is expected to be a late first round pick. Shane Bowers, an incoming freshman, is also expected to be a late first round pick. The other expected draft picks for the Terriers include defensemen David Farrance(3rd-4th), Cam Crotty(3rd-5th) and Kasper Kotkansalo(3rd-5th). When these three are drafted BU will have 7 defensemen drafted by NHL teams on their roster which is more than the Bruins currently have on their roster(6). There is also a strong chance all seven of these picks are drafted in the 5th round or higher.
Tolvanen will have his options as soon as he is drafted which will include the AHL, CHL, and transferring to another school such as UConn or UMass which traditionally have lower admission standards(see Letunov, Maxim). Tolvanen is expected to be a mid first round pick tomorrow night.

Doyle Somerby played the most games out of any Terrier in this year's senior class with 151 games as staple of BU's defensive corps including a brief appearance at forward this season due to injuries to the roster. Somerby was a regular in the lineup ever since he arrived on campus and was easily noticeable with large size and physical play. Somerby was a regular on the penalty kill all four years on campus and was a lot of times used as BU's go to defensive d pairing especially this season with defensive partner John Macleod.
Somerby's senior leadership this year was vital to the team's success as BU was the youngest team in the nation and only had three seniors and Somerby being the most battle tested out of those three. Somerby was the leader of a team this year that was one bounce away from a Frozen Four appearance for the second time in three seasons.
Somerby was drafted in the 5th round of the 2012 draft by the New York Islanders but will be weighing all of his options on his first professional contract by waiting until the August 15th deadline. Somerby will certainly have more options to sign a favorable contract at that time as LKas Vegas will have entered the league creating 8 more NHL level defensemen spots. Now Somerby will most likely not be plugged into a NHL lineup run away as he has a NHL body but will most likely need a year or two at the AHL level to further develop since he only switched to playing defenseman full time his final year of prep hockey at Kimball Union. I would expect Somerby to sign an AHL deal similar where he feels comfortable continuing his development similar to Ahti Oksanen did last season when he signed with the Rangers organizations and former coach Steve Greeley.
He certainly has the size, skating ability and skill to be a dominant NHL dmen in the not so distant future.
Somerby will graduate from BU with a degree in broadcast journalism and while he will almost certainly be playing professional hockey somewhere next fall, it certainly never hurts to have a degree from the best university on the face of the planet as a backup plan. Best of luck to Doyle as he begins his professional career.
McAvoy made his NHL debut after signing with the Bruins and playing in the AHL concluding the BU season ending two and a half weeks ago. McAvoy joins fellow underclassmen JFK and Clayton Keller in playing in an NHL and BU game this season. These three will join the seniors in not returning to Comm Ave and it is difficult to find flaws in any of their decisions since they are all seeing NHL time right away. It is obviously not ideal for BU's success for players to leave Comm Ave before graduation but it is a fact of life when you recruit top end players who drafted to play in the NHL. These three coming out of BU ready to contribute at the NHL level does nothing but build the brand that BU hockey is the place for top end talent to go and develop into NHL caliber players and ideally win while they are doing that.
This basically solidifies what BU's roster will look like next season barring any mid-summer departures. A lineup opening night would look like something similar to below but obviously things can always change once the players arrive on campus and begin practicing. I think the thing that stands out the most is that BU will in all likelihood have 7 drafted dmen next year which I would have to think is unheard of in the history of college hockey.
(Post on captain Doyle Somerby to come) Part 1- Tommy Kelley

Nick Roberto was the first recruit of the David Quinn era at BU and much like his classmates, he will leave Comm Ave with quite the story to explain his college career. Roberto amassed 44 points over 113 career games for the Terriers including 6 NCAA tournament games. The points were not always the prettiest thing in the world but Roberto always played hard and found ways to produce for his team(see below). That presence will certainly be missed next year.

Roberto's career was cut a season short due to a NCAA imposed suspension for his entire junior season due to gambling related activities. All of the details will never come out but Roberto's involvement in betting on professional sports turned into a year long suspension by the NCAA. It's unfortunate that any player would lose a year over something that is legal for him to do if he was in Las Vegas and had no impact on any games that he played in. The NCAA essentially just picks and chooses what rules they feel like enforcing. It is the same thing as deciding to suspend any D-1 athlete for any traffic infraction that they commit. Somehow, Roberto was the only player suspended from this investigation when there surely were others involved that saw no punishment whatsoever. The best part to come out of this story was to hear how maturely he handled the suspension. He still attended as many games as he could and practiced and trained with the team. He was a great example to younger players how to handle adversity. Many players may have looked to transfer schools or to leave school all together but not Roberto who stayed amid all the absurd rumors and came back as a leader on this year's team.
Roberto will certainly be remembered on Comm Ave for a majority of the reasons but I would hope the lasting image for most fans is a quality, hardworking forward who was a leader on a team a bounce away from the Frozen Four. He will certainly be missed at BU where four year players come at a premium. Roberto will have options both in and outside of hockey after he graduates this spring. He was not drafted by an NHL team but I could easily see an AHL team giving him a shot if he wants to go that route. Good luck to Nick in all his future endeavors.quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-89075758441709730952017-04-03T11:01:00.000-04:002017-04-03T22:15:44.527-04:00Senior Series: Tommy KelleyThis is the first post in the 2016-2017 Senior Series: Posts on Nick Roberto and Doyle Somerby to follow.

Tommy Kelley arrived at Boston University as a true freshman right out of St.. Sebastian's high school. At St. Seb's, Kelley put up 66 points including 34 goals over his last two seasons. That production was good enough to earn a spot on a roster at BU as he was recruited by former BU coaches , the legend Jack Parker and former associate head coach Mike Bavis. Kelley arrived on campus for the 2013-2014 despite a change in the coaching staff as former head coach Jack Parker retired and new coach David Quinn took over. I would imagine that this was a tough situation for a freshman who reportedly was not set to arrive on campus for sure until there were departures from Matt Nieto and Sahir Gill after the previous season. Kelley made the most of his opportunities and played in 32 games his freshman season under the new bench boss.

Kelley would go on to play 86 games for the BU Terriers over four seasons and accumulate 8 points for the Terriers with the above goal being my personal favorite. Kelley went from a freshman trying to find his role under a new coach to one of the leaders on this year's team. Kelley played 32 games his freshman year on a sub .500 team and then only four games his sophomore year on a team that went to the national championship game and then back to 30+ games in each of his junior and senior season on teams that went to the NCAA tournament. He was a normal penalty killer on this year's BU team who lead Hockey East in penalty kill %. In other words, Kelley has been through the ups and downs while at BU and certainly has a promising career moving forward whether it's in hockey or not. Kelley will have options if he wants to continue to purse hockey. He could lead the SPHL in pts/game like Mike Moran, who is a first year pro who graduated from last year's BU team. He certainly always appeared to handle himself the correct way on the ice and was well liked by his teammates. I certainly wish Tommy the best of luck moving forward.

PS: I don't really remember when I started to refer to him as the TK Lounge on twitter but I think I listened to one too many bad Dane Cook skits about the BK lounge in high school and that's where it came from. quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-25059553088133802722017-03-27T11:27:00.004-04:002017-03-27T11:43:26.294-04:00Terriers drop Regional Final to Duluth after ending racists' season in FargoThe BU Terriers' season came to a close this past Saturday night in the NCAA regional final against Minnesota Duluth. The loss comes following a double OT win in the first round against North Dakota in Fargo on Friday afternoon with the eventual game winner coming off the stick of Charlie McAvoy. Friday's game against North Dakota was a game that BU was pinned in their own zone throughout but with the help of freshman stud goalie Jake Oettinger, some opportunistic scoring and a timely overturned goal in OT gave BU the chance to win the game in double OT and send home the defending champion Fighting <strike>Sioux</strike> Hawks of North Dakota.

The next round matchup was with another NCHC opponent in Minnesota Duluth who BU had beaten in the same round of the 2015 NCAA tournament on their way to the national championship game. While the final score was the same(3-2), the opposite team came out on top on this one. The similarities between this game and the regional final from 2015 are pretty crazy. In both games, SOG were almost equal(27-27 in 2015, 22-20 UMD in 2017). The eventual winning team in both games took a 2-1 lead in the third only to give up a game tying goal to make it 2-2. Both game winning goals were powerplay goals with the only difference is this year's version came in OT. The loss ends BU's season while Duluth moves on to face Harvard in the Frozen Four in Chicago. Hockey is a game where you need to get some luck and bounces to win games especially in one and done tournaments such as the NCAA's. BU got bounces in 2015 and on Friday against North Dakota and didn't Saturday night in OT. It's not anyone's fault, it's just how the game goes sometimes. The only way to avoid it is to play so well that the game doesn't get to OT but against the #2 team in the country you can't expect that out of any team.

I feel like I say this every year but the only way to judge a season's success is if you won a national title or not. If you are one of the 59 teams who didn't win it, the season ends with a loss and it sucks. At BU, the expectation is always to be in a position to win a national championship. I would say despite what some negative fans may say, this team was in an OT to go to the Frozen Four and a chance to win a title. There were certainly hiccups along the way in the regular season but none of that really matters at the end of the day(besides the Beanpot). People will point to all the first round picks and say BU should have won it all and maybe they would have if they got a bounce Saturday but they didn't and here we are. If you want to blame a coaching staff who assembled the greatest recruiting class of all time or 18-20 year old kids for not being perfect by your standards because your life is that pathetic and negative then all the more power to you.

The loss ends the career for the three seniors Tommy Kelley, Nick Roberto(who lost a year due to the NCAA being assholes), and captain Doyle Somerby. I will touch more on each of them in the coming days when I do the senior posts but they have been through the ringer while at BU. Kelley and Somerby were recruited by the old coaching staff and had to wonder where they fit into the program moving forward once Coach Quinn was hired. Roberto endured a year long suspension to take the fall for others last season and they all endured the 10 win season their freshman year. Good luck to all of them in their future endeavors.

The loss of underclassmen is what can hurt hockey programs all over the country for the next season. The BU coaching staff understands this as they recruit to replace players likely to leave for the NHL. One such departure has already taken place with freshman forward Clayton Keller signing with the Arizona Coyotes who took him 7th overall in this past year's draft. Keller was a stud for BU this year and is set to make his NHL debut tonight in his hometown of St. Louis. There could be more to come for BU players as Jordan Greenway, JFK, Charlie McAvoy, and Brandon Hickey will have opportunities to sign professional contracts if they so choose. I will never fault a kid for signing a professional contract and leaving school early if that's what they think is best for their career. BU has quite the freshman class coming in again next year to replace these types of players. It will most likely be an 8 man class with 5 of those 8 likely to be drafted along with freshman goalie Jake Oettinger who is draft eligible this year. Due to this class, BU has the potential to be an even deeper team next year than they were this year and they will again be one of the most talented teams in the country and a title contender. quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-37530670337063939382017-03-12T22:36:00.001-04:002017-03-12T22:36:39.322-04:00BU sweeps lil bro, ends their seasonThe BU Terriers overcame 2-0 deficits to beat their crosstown<strike> rival </strike>opponent in the Hockey East Quarterfinal round. In both nights BU dug themselves early 2-0 deficits in the first period where they would climb within one in the second period and then tie and win the game in the third/OT with both game winners coming on powerplay goals. Northeastern boats one of the strongest offensive groups in the nation so it was a real good sign as the postseason kicks off that BU's defense and goaltending held them to four goals over two games. That defense may take a hit if defenseman John Macleod, out was injured Friday night, is out long term. Macleod has been the most improved defenseman and maybe player on the roster for the Terriers is a key penalty killer for the team. Bobo Carpenter was also banged up over the weekend but according to Coach Quinn's postgame comments may be back in the lineup next weekend.

The highlight below is funny because it's the last game Northeastern will play this year

The Terriers move on to the Hockey East semifinals against familiar foe Boston College who is fighting for their NCAA tournament lives going into the game. Motivation should be no factor in a rivalry game like this but BC needs a win to have any chance of a NCAA berth and to beat BU once in the 2016-2017 season. BC certainly showed that with a 2 game sweep and thumping of UVM in the QF round. With that said, the biggest challenge for BU is that BC is so bad offensively it will be difficult for them to put themselves into the comfortable 2-0 hole that they dug themselves into against Northeastern both games this past weekend. BC has only scored two goals in three games against BU so it will take some real defensive breakdowns in order for them to score two goals in one game.

BU enters the game with a NCAA berth all but solidified but fighting for the best possible seeding. There is an outside chance at a #1 seed and also a higher 2 seed does favor BU since it will give them a better chance of staying in an east regional for the NCAA tournament if you care about that type of thing(I am personally pulling for Fargo). The most important thing for BU is to continue to play solid responsible postseason hockey and get better each game they play. They may be a young, immature team but when they are clicking, they are the best team in the country.quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-9548213947625409312017-02-24T15:55:00.000-05:002017-02-24T15:55:39.719-05:00Terriers face off with Notre DameThe BU Terriers finish their regular season schedule this weekend with a pair of home games against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with both teams having a shot at the league title. For Notre Dame, it is an opportunity to ensure their place in the NCAA tournament as well as leave Hockey East for the Big Ten as regular season conference champions. The Terriers have struggled with Notre Dame in past years posting a 1-5-1 record against the Irish since David Quinn has taken over as head coach at BU. In the games against the Irish the last few seasons the Terrier have had difficulty getting victories despite outshooting the Irish. In the last four meetings, the team with the fewer amount of shots has not lost with BU going 1-2-1 in those games despite outshooting Jeff Jackson's crew by 41 shots total in those four games combined. The one game BU won they only posted 24 shots.

Part of the struggles for BU has been that ND goalies Cal Peterson is very good and part of is that he has always been on when facing the Terriers. Coach Quinn referred to the 1-0 loss at Notre Dame being the end of the season last year as the Terriers never seemed to play well after that difficult defeat in which they dominated play and outshot the Irish 39-28. Notre Dame has been an extremely frustrating opponent to play against for BU and it's just as bad for any fan who has to listen to the fake ND hockey fans from Southie after the game like I did last time BU hosted Notre Dame. This is an important weekend for the Terriers and me to wipe those memories from their minds by hopefully putting up another 8 goal performance like they did to UNH in their last game last Saturday.

These games also happen to decide the conference championship for the season. The Terriers currently sit tied for second at 27 league points. They are two points back of BC and tied with Lowell with one game in hand on both while ND sits one point back of the Terriers and RiverHawks. The Terriers control their own destiny in that they guarantee themselves a share of the league title with two wins this weekend. I would be worried playing Notre Dame with a league title on the line but as Kieffer Bellows said after last week's game "We got our swagger back" . Time for two more bricks in the wall.
The Terriers and Crimson haven't faced off in a Beanpot final since 1998 which the Terriers won in overtime. These two programs did meet earlier this season at Agganis Arena which resulted in a 5-3 BU victory. The Terriers come off a 3-2 loss to UMass Lowell this past Friday where they clearly let Lowell win since they wanted Hockey East to have more teams in the running for a NCAA at large berth while Harvard easily beat Union because they hate America and probably sided with the confederacy during the Civil War. BU at least tried to lose to Union in January by scheduling them during World Juniors but still beat them with 2/3 of a lineup.

This game figures to have some highlight reel plays as Beanpot championships typically do. Harvard have some top end forwards with Alex Kerfoot, Tyler Moy, Ryan Donato and Co and are backstopped by Merrick Madsen who is amazingly average with a .918 save percentage which actually gets him an A in one of his stats classes at Harvard according to sources.

BU will be playing for their first trophy of the season tomorrow which should get BU fans excited as the Beanpot always does. Just don't expect any casual fans to be rooting for the Terriers as well. Enough other college hockey fans hate the Beanpot already because they aren't invited. You add that on top of how easy it is to hate a very talented team like BU and you will have BU fans versus the rest of college hockey tomorrow night. It's a lot more fun to win trophies when it ticks off people all over the continent in the process anyway.
The Terriers got a powerplay goal from freshman bruiser Pat Curry and then added late tallies from sophomores JFK and Bobo to sweep the conference series with their rival. The teams will face off again on the first Monday of the Beanpot and BU will probably shut them out again.

The Terriers have now won six games in a row(McAvoy, Keller, Bellows, Oettinger, Greenway, and Harper have won 13 games in a row) and are 2nd in Hockey East and third nationally Pairwise. The wagon is going full steam ahead. Very bad news for the rest of college hockey.
The BU Terriers will head into the first half at a 10-5-2 mark. 10 wins in the first half of the schedule usually puts a team in a good position to make the NCAA tournament. Last year's team had 9 wins and the 2014-15 team had 11 wins at the half way mark. BU will open the second half shorthanded against Union next Thursday 1/5 due to 7 guys being away at World Juniors. BU will most likely only have 11 forwards ,6 defensemen and 2 goalies available with no healthy scratches while going up against a top 10 team. It isn't exactly what the doctor ordered to start the second half but it will be a great win if they can pull it off.

This CHN story on BU's first half has some good quotes from Quinn on what he thought of the team's first half and what he expects for the second half once he gets 7 players back from the WJC.

Speaking of World Juniors, while Clayton Keller, Jordan Greenway, Charlie McAvoy, Kieffer Bellows, and Patrick Harper dominate games for the US and Dante Fabbro helps make Canada somewhat likable as a country, good friend of BSRS, BurntBoats has started selling a great t shirt for all BU/USA fans. The shirt not only looks great but it cures all of your aches and pains especially back pain that a lot of BU fans have from carrying the rest of the country through World Juniors.
BU has also added a new third string goalie for the second semester as sophomore Max Prawdzik is taking the semester off to get some reps in the NAHL. It is expected that Prawdzik will return to the program next fall as a sophomore. Only at BU would a D1 goalie just be planning to enroll at the school and able fill in like this. PC only has one D1 capable goalie on their roster currently which makes this whole situation even funnier.
Ref Corsi **Warning** This section is very boring unless you like reading about penalty minutes and why never watching Kevin Shea ref a game again is my new year's resolution.

Through the first half of the Hockey East schedule, penalty minutes were up over 6 minutes per game from last year and over 8 minutes per game from two years ago. This is no surprise as the NCAA as a whole has looked to call games tighter. My boy Kevin Shea has still found a way to lead all refs with 34.2 pms/game. Stephen McInchak called the least amount of penalty minutes/game with 20.6 but he does Notre Dame games mostly so those numbers are not necessarily indicative of his reffing style overall. I would vote for Chris Millea as my first half ref MVP since I can't recall him being a ref for regular season games but he did three this semester according to the HE website and came in below the league average at 27.33 PM's per game for three games. He was also killin' it as a liney with style almost as good as T. Low's(another HE ref for any ref corsi newbs). First half MVP for linesmen is Tommy George because he has reffed at the Olympics and he loves my ref corsi posts. Stay tuned at the end of the regular season for my big ref corsi post and breakdown. I think some refs are in for some big second half comebacks(looking at you and your 32.7pm's/game Jack Millea)quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-4679333830586902016-12-07T23:26:00.000-05:002016-12-07T23:26:22.646-05:00BU takes 3 out of 4 points from PCThe BU Terriers continued to find ways to take points from opponents without their full lineup available. The Terriers won Friday night at Providence College without the services of Clayton Keller(injury), Jordan Greenway(team violation) and Nick Roberto after he was ejected early in the first period. The Terriers were outshot by over a 2:1(39 to 18) margin but freshman Jake Oettinger stood on his head to lead the Terriers to a come from behind victory. The Terriers got goals from JFK and Nikolas Olsson in under two minutes to the second period. The Terriers were undisciplined when it came to penalties taking 8 penalties on the night but killed all 7 powerplays that PC was awarded.

The Terriers bounced back with a better effort on Saturday night but found themselves in a 2-0 hole to PC going into the third period. Juniors Brandon Hickey and Nikolas Olsson tied the game up for the Terriers with big goals late in the third period to secure the third point for the Terriers on the weekend. Both goals came with under 5 minutes left in regulation time.

There was also big news earlier this week as 8 Terriers were named to World Junior Team Preliminary rosters. 7 were named to the US Team along with Dante Fabbro to the Canadian roster. The 7 Americans include 4 forwards(Bellow, Keller, Harper, Greenway), 2 defensemen(McAvoy and Krys) and a goalie(Oettinger). Having this amount of players is unprecedented as was having 5 first round picks this past June in the NHL draft. David Quinn continues to display his dominance of acquiring talent over every other college and major junior program out there.

Harper is a great story to even make the preliminary roster. BU committed Harper for 2016 or 2017 originally but ended up taking him this year because he was so good last year at Avon Old Farms and for the games he played in the USHL. He is now leading BU in points and could make the world junior team. The other 7 BU guys are supposed to be playing this well and make this team while Harper just refuses to take a step back at any level whether that be high school junior or NCAA and maybe now World Juniors.

Before World Juniors and the winter break for the rest of the team, the Terriers have two crucial league games with surprisingly successful Vermont Catamounts as well as a non league game next Tuesday versus Yale. UVM is lead by freshman Ross Colton, sophomore Craig Puffer(such a UVM hockey player name) and senior Mario Puskarich. The Catamounts have gotten off to their best start in years at 9-3-2 and will provide a tough test for the Terriers...
oh wait nevermind no they won't. Clayton Keller coming back into the lineup allows the Terriers to get back to the lineup the staff imagine at the beginning of the season for one of the first times this season. This will take pressure off the defense and goaltending that has been so good(1st in the league in goals allowed) as the offense will have more possession and generate more offensive chances to improve on the 7th ranked offense in Hockey East. UVM is certainly a good chance to do so as UVM's defense has not faced much in regards to top end offensive lineups so it will be important for BU to get them on their heels early in both games to set the tone.
Junior Connor LaCouvee won both games for the Terriers raising his save percentage to .938 in four games. The Terriers now sit 7-4-1 on the season and currently 8th in the way too early pairwise rankings. Now obviously despite the high pairwise ranking, losing games to teams such as UConn was not part of what any BU fan had in mind at the beginning of the year. The team has disappointed at times as they learn how to win and respond to adversity but with that said if these games are the low points as the team gets better and healthier with the return of Clayton Keller, Nik Olsson and Co. over the next month then this can still be a hell of a team this year and still is a national championship competitor.

Some fans on certain online forums will tell you right now that anything less than perfection means the coach should be fired and all the players aren't as good as everyone thought. I can say with certainty that 30 NHL gms and numerous NCAA coaches were not wrong on the amount of talent that BU has or how good of a coach David Quinn is. This team is very talented and has consistently brought the effort of a championship team. They got a bad break on the first goal against UConn with a lack of a tripping call and never really recovered despite dominating the first 30 minutes of the game but if that is the low point of the season, I will take it in a heartbeat. Moral of the story is fans on the internet are idiots besides me, I'm a genius.

The Terriers return to action this coming weekend with a pair against Providence College. The Friars haven't had as much success as the past few years stumbling out to 5-5-2 record which is due mostly to the awful .884 save percentage they have gotten from sophomore goalie Hayden Hawkey. He has played every game for the Friars which tells you all you need to know about their goaltending situation. He has been that bad and the backup goalies still can't sniff the ice. The Terriers needs to take advantage of that as they have two goalies if not three that are better than anything PC has to offer. Three points should be the minimum goal this weekend with a sweep being the strong preference as .500 teams you need to take care of if you want to be competing for a conference title.

BU played well offensively both nights but played more disciplined and defensively responsible on Saturday night which lead to a 3-0 shutout win after a 4-4 tie on Friday night at Matthews Arena. Jordan Greenway, who scored the go ahead goal before taking a misconduct penalty while celebrating was benched for the first period of Saturday's night game by Coach Quinn who appeared to want to send a message that any type of celebrating penalty will not be tolerated.

Overall, it was a good weekend for the Terriers who got their first points in league play and continued to show flashes of dominance which will hopefully turn into stretches of dominance and then eventually complete game dominance by March and April. The biggest story out of the weekend was on the injury front as Clayton Keller suffered a knee injury has been termed out 'long term' by coach Quinn. This is obviously bad news for BU as Keller is their second leading scorer and plays on its top line with Jordan Greenway and Patrick Harper. It is being rumored that it is a MCL injury that will keep Keller out weeks to months. This would put Keller out until the beginning of the second semester but I think this injury can actually help BU long term or I'm just trying to convince myself of that. So here comes the spin zone (brought to you by Evan Rodrigues Inc)

Without Keller for an extended period, BU will be forced to move a center up in their lineup or move Bobo Carpenter back to center and move up a wing which would most likely be Nick Roberto or Ryan Cloonan(if healthy). Roberto has 5 points in 7 games so far this year and seems like the more likely option but no matter who it is, BU will be shorthanded an elite forward and the rest of the lineup will be forced to pick up for the lost production. This should help the team long term as it will give more players time to develop with additional ice time and opportunities to prove that they can produce consistently. I am not sure if I actually believe this but I'm going to keep saying it until I do. Nick Roberto definitely has the talent to fill in a top 6 role and produce for the Terriers. Roberto, who was suspended all of last year, after being railroaded by the NCAA is getting back into game shape and can provide some valuable senior leadership to the top 6 forward who were all freshmen and sophomore before this weekend. I'm not saying the team will be better without Keller because they will not but it will help with the development of other players who will be helpful in providing more scoring depth later in the season.

BU's first test will be two games at the University of Michigan this weekend where they face a young Michigan team(4-3-1) that similar to BC lost a lot of their upperclassmen over this past summer. BU will be looking for their second road win of the year and their first since opening night. The real questions for the weekend though is which BU first round pick will a Michigan upperclassman claim "didn't do much"(see below) after they score the game tying goal. Meanwhile if there is a review this weekend Michigan will probably play the game under protest since their old senile head coach hates replays to get calls correct. It is rare that you go to Michigan expecting to win two games but against a young inconsistent team that lost to Union, UVM and Dartmouth it should be the goal of the weekend.
The Huskies come into the matchup 3-2-2 on the year the popular pick among many people to be one of BU's toughest competitors this season. The probably for Northeastern is that BU has dominated them forever(161-58-8) and especially since David Quinn took over at BU. The Terriers are 7-1 against the Huskies over the last three years with the one loss in a 6-5 game at the end of 2015 season when BU had all but clinched the Hockey East regular season title.

Lil Bro is lead this season by senior forward Zach Aston-Reese, junior Dylan Sikura, and sophomore Adam Gaudette who all have double digit points through ten games this year. The Huskies also are getting contributions from senior assistant captain and former Terrier Brendan Collier. Former Terrier Sam Kurker is also on the roster. I certainly don't typically root for lil bro unless they are playing BC(or maybe Lowell if Lowell fans are being stupid which is most of the time) but most if not all BU fans seem to be pulling for Collier and Kurker to succeed as they have moved on in their careers.

Northeastern is the type of team that BU is set up to have success with as they play a similar offensive style as BU but have significantly less talent at every position . This is no fault of Northeastern as every team in the NCAA and CHL has significantly less talent than BU. Lil Bro may come out flying tomorrow night at home and try to take a shot at the big bro's mouth but we all know how this fight(if you can call it that) ends. It ends with the Terriers adding two more bricks to that wall of wins.quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-77331167233392297972016-10-28T14:28:00.000-04:002016-10-28T14:34:28.961-04:00BU continues to own the recruiting trail

BU picked up a huge commitment for next season yesterday with star forward Shane Bowers of the USHL announcing his commitment to BU. Bowers picked BU over BC and Wisconsin because he probably wants to win in college and then play in the NHL which you can only do at one of those three schools right now. Bowers is the latest addition to another stacked class for David Quinn and Co. and should be the last the forward commitment for the 2017 class. Bowers joins classmates Logan Cockerill, Brady Tkachuck, Ty Amonte, and Hank Crone as forwards for next year's class.
BU is obviously loaded up at forward for next year and prepared for possible early departures that will most likely take place after this season. David Quinn and the rest of the staff are making BU a great place play and watch hockey. You see fans every summer complaining about guys leaving early to go to play in the AHL but that should never happen at BU. I would love for JFK, McAvoy and Greenway to come back next year for their junior seasons but if they don't they have very talented guys to come in and replace them.

Bowers is a huge get as he will be a first round pick in the NHL draft next June. He has the size and skill set every NHL GM and NCAA coach desire in a player. He should be another freshman who can come in and play top 6 forward minutes right away. It's scary to think about how good BU could be if they get some of their current high draft picks to stay at forward for next year. Assuming no early departures(which won't happen) BU would potentially have 8 drafted forwards and 7 drafted defensemen with a first round pick in net. Like I said, someone and most likely multiple guys will turn pro but the amount of talent this program currently has is unprecedented.
The BU Terriers get back on the winning track in their regular season opener with a convincing 7-0 victory over Sacred Heart. BU got goals from 7 different players including the first collegiate goals for freshmen Dante Fabbro and Chad Krys. The Terriers were lead by Jordan Greenway and Nick Roberto(sucks to suck NCAA) who each had a goal and two assists while freshman Jake Oettinger recorded his first career shutout in net.

BU dominated play for the majority of the game outshooting the Pioneers 40-24 with only the second period being close in shots(13-12) and that was mostly due to BU having to kill off two 5 on 3 powerplays. BU did what a Hockey East team should do to an Atlantic Hockey team despite the league's 1-3-2 record against Atlantic hockey teams before last night.
BU returns to action tonight at Agganis Arena against last year's national runner up, Quinnipiac Bobcats. BU beat QU 4-1 in their only matchup last season. I would expect a similar lineup from last night besides most likely Diffley playing for Macleod as they continue to rotate the 6th d spot in the lineup.quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-588925780510003226.post-34161567505573670722016-10-13T09:22:00.001-04:002016-10-13T09:22:39.580-04:00Recruiting Update: BU lands another top dmanBU has landed another top recruit in Finnish defenseman Kasper Kotkansalo. Kotkansalo is 2017 NHL draft eligible and is currently projected to a mid round pick. Kansalo is a 6'2", 190lb left shot dman from Espoo,Finland who played for the Jr-A U 20 Blues last season which is the same team that former Terrier Ahti Okansen played for.
Kotkansalo almost certainly will be heading to BU next year with the departure of senior Doyle Somerby and the possibility of Charlie McAvoy, Dante Fabbro and Brandon Hickey leaving after the season to pursue professional careers. All three most likely will not leave but BU needs to be prepared for atleast one of them to leave. Kotkansalo along with U18 dman David Farrance give BU two very strong options to come in and fill top 6 roles next season on the blueline. I personally love the move just because I assume he is going to be as awesome and entertaining to watch play as Ahti was.

Your Team: Uconn Huskies
2015-2016 record: 11-21-4(6-12-4)
Your outlook: Better than the four previously mentioned teams but still not a serious contender. It really is amazing how top heavy of a roster former BC assistant coach Cavanuagh has assembled down in Storrs. There are literally four good players on the entire roster. Actually, it is quite believable if you take a look at BC's roster. Letunov fell into his lap when his academics became an issue everywhere else. They still have little to no depth throughout the roster despite having average goaltending and two 30+ point scorers last season. They should be better but they won't be because their assistant coach(Joe Pereira) is 10X the coach that their head coach is and ever will be.
The Huskies look to improve on their poor campaign from a year ago where they were the real wildcard in Hockey East. They weren't a wildcard in a good way but more so in a they could lose to anyone in the country any given night(Alabama Huntsville, UMass, UVM) but also beat anyone in the country on any given night as well(BU). They started this year off strong sweeping Huntsville at home like they should have but we will see when Cavanaugh's lack of actualy coaching ability catches up with them.quackquackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17163150966853812372noreply@blogger.com1
