Weekend Recap: BU brushes away Colgate

The BU men's hockey team killed a 5 on 3 powerplay early in their season opener and never looked back. BU got goals from Patrick Harper(x2), Nick Roberto(shorthanded), Clayton Keller, Tommy Kelly and sophomore assistant captain Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson. Freshman goalie Jake Oettinger was huge(literally and figuratively) in goal including a penalty shot save. The win is obviously a great start to the season especially in comparison to last year's opening loss at Union where the team had numerous defensive breakdowns. This BU team should win lots of games but the question has been  and will continue to be if they can bring it night in and night out since they are so young. This has never been an issue with a David Quinn coached team so I am not concerned that this will actually be an issue going forward. The team seems to be pretty set on blocking out the hype around them the best they can and so am I. Only game that matters/exists is Denver next weekend.

BU travels to Denver this weekend to face the 0-2 but top 10 ranked Denver Pioneers. There is approximately a 0% chance BU takes a team as talented as Denver lightly especially when they ended BU's season last year in the NCAA regional semifinal. The returning players should be looking forward to a chance to make Denver 0-3 and then 0-4 to begin the year. The freshmen should be looking to score a shit ton of goals and dominate the opponent as they have done thus far. The only team that can beat BU this weekend will be themselves. Denver is talented yes but BU is better in net on defense and up front especially now that top Denver forward Dylan Gambrell is out 4-6 weeks.Denver returns some decent talent including senior defenseman Will Butcher who has been playing college hockey for roughly 47 years. They rotated goalies between senior Evan Cowley and junior Tanner Jailet this weekend with neither of them inspiring any great confidence with this performances.
