Here is just a few notes on what happened in day one of the NFL Draft that took place last night on ESPN...
-The Rams took Sam Bradford with the first overall pick as expected. Bradford is the ultimate boom or bust pick here and I think is a mistake for Saint Louis. Suh would have been the smart pick here
-I got picks 1,2,3,5,7 correct from my mock draft while picks 4-6 were switched which isn't too shabby since I knew as soon as the Raiders picked the draft would fall out of control.
-The Raiders actually made a solid pick in Alabama ILB Rolando McClain.
-The 49ers had the best first round out of anybody with two solid offensive lineman for years to come.
- Jerry Jones jumps up for Dez Bryant the year everyone thinks he is going to stay put and make a solid pick.
- Josh McDaniels continues to be a gun-slinger and trades multiple picks to trade up and get Florida project QB Tim Tebow with Jimmy Clausen still on the board.
-Clausen has fallen out of the first round after being projected as high as 4th overall. He is likely to go early in the second to someone trading up or to Cleveland or KC. I could even see him possibly going to Minnesota to learn under Brett Favre for a year or two before he plays.
- The Pats traded down twice picking up a 4th and a 3rd round pick later in the draft while staying in the first round to take CB Devin McCourty from Rutgers. This is a solid selection even if at first glance it looks somewhat unnecessary. McCourty is a solid pick who helps a secondary that must cover Santonion Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Brandon Marshall twice a year now. Everyone wonders why they didn't take Sergio Kindle or Jared Odrick here but Belichick must know their value and may be waiting until sometime tonight to take Kindle or find someone he feels fits better in New England than them. The Patriots never draft based purely on need. It is always an educated decision on what the value of each pick is. The only thing for sure is that Belichick & Co will trade down to get more picks which is why they have 13 picks this year(4 tonight). Everyone calling for an OLB and DE shutup until we re though round 4 and if neither position is addressed then we got issues. Stay tuned for the draft tonight 6 et ESPN.
