Hungover Recap- BU beats SFX 2-1 in exhibition game

The BU Terriers took a 2-1 victory in an exhibition game(highlights) against St. Francis-Xavier last night at Agganis Arena in front of 3,627 fans.  Nick Roberto got the scoring started off with a rebound PP goal in the first period and Tommy Kelley scored the game winner on a deflected slapper with less than 3 minutes remaining.

Every player on the roster got into the action last night and helped contribute to the 2-1 win. In net, Sean Maguire, Anthony Moccia, and Matt O'Connor each took a period. Maguire gave up the lone goal on a rebound that he should have controlled better but that was the only blemish defensively. Moccia saw his first career playing action and was perfect with the help of the crossbar and some great defense in front of him. O'Connor was solid in the third making 16 saves to get the win. I am a big fan of his new pads as well(white with red at the bottom of the pad).

Below is a list of guys who stood out to me as guys who had a good night

1. Nick Roberto- The freshman not only got the first goal for the Terriers but saw serious ice time on the power play and on the third line with fellow freshman Tommy Kelley and senior Jake Moscatel.
2. Matt O'Connor- OC looked to be back to his form from the first half last year when he was at his best, making 16 saves to get the win.
3. Garrett Noonan- Noonan played like a captain last night. Was confident with the puck and lead the offensive zone attack a few times.
4. Jake Moscatel- He certainly won some more fans as he stood up to 3 X-men during one scuffle which earned him 4 penalty minutes including instigating which I didn't know was a call in college. Moscatel seems to be embracing the role of the physical presence up front which is bad news for opponents and good news for BU fans.
5. Patrick MacGregor- I rarely noticed Truck out there last night which is a good thing for his game because that means he limited his mistakes and made good decisions with the puck.
6. Matt Lane/Cason Hohmann- These two were on a line with Sam Kurker and while they didn't score, they made some slick passes to set each other up for some high quality chances.

BU hosts UMass Friday in their regular season opener and follow that with a home game against Holy Cross on Saturday night. They lost their last game to both of those teams(UMass last February and Holy Cross in October of 2011). There should be no lack of focus this week as the first full week of practice will be useful to help the scoring touch that the forwards seemed to struggle with last night. My biggest complain offensively was not getting pucks on the net when they had opportunities to do so. They did get 45 shots on net which is a positive for the offensive outlook next weekend. Defensively, Coach Quinn hit on this in his press conference, but they got caught watching pucks a few times in the third. It is a big opening weekend for the Terriers as they face two teams that they should beat before they face 3 straight ranked opponents.

  1. Team will have trouble scoring goals for a while. In about two months we will see a pretty good team, I believe.

  2. I agree with you. They just need the upperclassmen to do their best to carry the scoring until the freshmen full adjust to the college game. I still think Baillargeon, Roberto, and Kelley could contribute to the scoring right away
