It was a bitter end for Jack Parker's 2009-2010 men's hockey team. A season that was characterized by apparent lapses in concentration ended in appropriate fashion, a 5-2 beating handed down by UMaine, in a game where the Terriers never really got going. Maine posted 2 goals in the first, 1 in the second, and 2 in third (including an empty netter), while holding the Terriers to 24 shots on goal and 2 goals (from Saponari and Shattenkirk, both in the third).
And so begins the off season, one that has already been pretty eventful as far as departing players. The Terriers will lose Seniors Luke Popko (C), Zach Cohen (F), and crowd favorite Eric Gryba (D), as well as Junior Nick Bonino (F) who recently signed an entry level deal with the Anaheim Ducks. Unconfirmed but reportedly leaving are juniors Kevin Shattenkirk (D) and Colby Cohen (D), both of whom would be signing deals with the Colorado Avalanche. Assuming we lose all 6 players, that takes out 4 of the top 6 point scorers from this past season, including Bonino who led all BU icemen with 38 points. Counting all 6 players, that eliminates 43% of our point total (141/329). Throw in the fact that Shattenkirk, Bonino, and Gryba were all captains (Bonino and Gryba were Assistant Captains), and that's a pretty heavy loss for our squad.
Luckily, it seems that Coach Parker was preparing for the departure of more than just his seniors. His incoming freshman class is currently made up of 5 recruits, forwards Charlie Coyle, Matt Nieto, Yasin Cisse, Sahir Gill, and defenseman Adam Clendening. Of this group, 4 were ranked in CollegeHockey247's top 50 recruits - Nieto(3), Coyle(15), Clendening(22), and Gill(39). See the complete list here collegehockey247.rivals.com .
As the off season continues, we will bring you updates on departing/arriving Terriers, as well as any other important updates regarding Terrier hockey.
