Terrier Hockey Offseason Recap

A lot has happened in the last month or so of the offseason of BU hockey with more still to come later this summer.

1. Now former Terrier goalie Matt O'Connor has had a busy month of May as he has graduated from BU(in 3 years) and signed a two year entry level deal with the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa always seemed like the favorite for the Toronto native as he could go there and compete for playing time right away as well as play somewhere close to his family. Congrats to Matt on his new deal and best of luck moving forward.

2. Charlie Coyle, Nick Bonino and Jack Eichel showed the world what BU hockey was about at the World Championships. All three Terriers played pivotal roles on a team that took home Bronze over in Prague. It was certainly great to see them all contribute and help lead their country to a medal. Eichel definitely proved that he belongs with NHL talent throughout this tournament. This doesn't mean it's a sure thing he is leaving BU since there is NHL talent throughout the BU roster but no fan with a functional brain can fault him if he did leave for the NHL.

3. BU received commitments from Brady Tkachuk and Max Prawdzik. Tkachuk is the youngest son of former Terrier and NHL star Keith Tkachuk. He is slated to play for the USNTDP the next few seasons and will most likely arrive on Comm Ave in 2017. He was drafted by the London Knights of the OHL where his older brother just committed to play but it appears that many people believe he will keep his commitment to play for the Terriers. Prawdzik will be arriving at BU this fall to join the competition in net along with sophomore Connor LaCouvee and redshirt junior Sean Maguire. It will be an open competition in net as none of the goalies have started regularly at the NCAA level. Maguire has the most experience and would be the favorite in my eyes but it all depends how well he recovers from taking a full year off.

What college program has the best numbers in the NHL playoffs through Week 1?

The title of this post is a rhetorical question because there is only one real answer (unless I missed a Michigan alum which is very possible)

BU continues to dominate on the recruiting trails

The coaching staff of the BU hockey team continues to dominate on the recruiting trail. They have added two more recruits in the last week. Hank Crone was added for the 2016 or 2017 class earlier this week while Sean MacTavish was added for 2015 yesterday.

The Crone announcement was made via Twitter on Tuesday. Crone is an undersized playmaker from Texas currently playing with the U16 Stars program. He had 17 goals and 23 assists in 27 games for the Stars this past season. He was signed to a tender by the Omaha Lancers of the USHL earlier this week as well so it appears he will be heading there for the next 2-3 seasons until he arrives at BU. He will need that time to develop as he is undersized(as of now) at 5'8" 141lbs but he is only 16 years old so he will continue to develop and grow in his time in the USHL.  Crone was ranked as the third best skater at the Tier I Elite Showcase back in October. They describe him as a dynamic forward who creates offense in all types of situations. This is certainly a great get for BU as that 2016 class continues to grow stronger with USA U-17 bound Clayton Keller and Johnny McDermott.

BU Freshman Class Preview - Forwards Part 1

This is Part 1 of a 3 Part Preview of this year's freshman class. The other two parts will come out in the coming weeks as the class is finalized and the season approaches.

1. Brendan Collier, F, 5'9", 185-Charlestown,MA #8-(Valley Junior Warriors, EJHL, 15-33-48, 49 GP)


Collier is a local product who was a star on his high school team at Malden Catholic for 4 years. He played last year for the Valley Junior Warriors of the EJHL and posted a solid 48 point line in 49 games. This was after he posted 64 points and 27 goals in 22 games as a senior in high school. That includes the game winning goal in the Super 8 Championship game.

 There was also a Boston Globe article about Collier from last October which details his success at the high school level and the transition to the junior level. Collier's junior coach, Andy Heinze, is quoted in the article as saying "He's just such a smart player, and he is talented enough to score at this level, I would expect him to do the same at BU. He is that good."

From everything you read on Collier, he seems ready for the college game due to his vision and feel for the game. He just seems like a hockey player that should contribute from the get-go this year. He could even sneak into the top 6 forwards with only 3 of the top 6 returning from last year's BU squad. I would expect seventh round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012 to become a fan favorite rather quickly for the gritty way he plays the game and put up between 20-30 points this season.

"We hear this about him, he’s just a pure hockey player. Goal line to goal line, he works so hard, got a good compete level. I think he’s going to be a great college player. He’s got some potential because he just works so hard.” 

Peter Chiarelli’s(Bruins GM) take: “A couple of interesting one’s, the Collier kid, [he is] kind of under the radar a little bit, but a real gritty kid.”

2013 Hatredmeter

This is the 2013 version of the Hatredmeter for each team in the conference. I would do non-conference teams as well but that would take all day thanks to certain schools(looking at you NoDak)

This post is going to focus on which teams I hate most in the conference and why. To clarify, I hate them all but it's fun to rank them accordingly. This may differ for other BU fans and probably will even with my fellow bloggers(Feliz Miguel loves UNH which is quite unfortunate, Hatrick Swayze loves Notre Dame football for some unknown reason) but that's why we have the comment function. However, my guess is that all BU hockey  fans will agree on who is going to come out of this list at #1.

*Notre Dame is being added to conference this season so there are now 10 teams to hate instead of just 9.

10th most hated team(or least hated team in the conference)- UMass- This was a fairly easy decision for me. Their fans may flip me off and yell at me when I'm in Mullins but I fully expect that and respect that from opposing fans. Former coach Toot Cahoon was a BU guy who coached and played for the Terriers. Also former Terrier captain Joe Pereira's younger brother Mike plays for the Minutemen.  Please don't mistake this for me being a fan of their program. Their program is a joke and all their fans leave as soon as the team goes down a goal. They will celebrate like they won the national championship when they beat BU in the regular season because quite frankly, that is as close as they will get. UMass being ranked least hated is basically just admitting that someone has to come in 2nd to BU in the conference this year and if I had to pick, it would be UMass. The really only negative are those jokes from Fight Mass. Last year's ranking- 9

Weekend Preview- Time to bundle some Friars

The 12-9 BU Terriers face off with 10-9-3 PC Friars this weekend in a home and home series. Friday night's game will be held at Schneider Arena in Providence and Saturday night will be back in Boston at Agganis Arena. The Terriers took the first game this year back in October. It was a 4-2 win at Agganis Arena. The Friars are currently tied with BU for 3rd in the conference with 18 pts in 15 games played. The Friars are 3-1 in their last 4 since goalie Jon Gillies returned from his stint with team USA in the WJC. That lone loss was a 2-1 loss at Lowell where Gillies played absurdly well. He is certainly living up to the hype he had as a recruit with his .930 save % and 2.12 GAA.  PC is lead by junior(and member of my fantasy team-though he will be benched this weekend) Derek Army. He has a solid 10-7-17 line in 22 GP. Ross Maureman and Shane Luke are also threats to score. The BU defense will also need to keep an eye on freshman Mark Jankowski who is a skilled forward that has been fighting through some injuries so far this year. PC doesn't have a ton of skilled guys up front but they know how to grind and score goals. They typically win in low scoring games with Gillies and captain dman Myles Harvey being the backbone of their defense.

Bracketology

It is the time of year where everyone starts to look at all the possible draws for their respective teams in the NCAA tournament in March/April. The tournament begins at 4 regional sites March 29-31 and then moves to the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh on April 9-11. The seeding is based entirely on the Pairwise rankings which fluctuate like crazy based on each game. I am going to break down the current rankings and take a wild guess at what I think they will look like to end the year. My first shot I took on twitter had BU, Western Michigan, Notre Dame and Quinnipiac in the Frozen Four. I am going to stray from that slightly based on how my projected bracket turns out. I was 3/4 two years ago in 2011. Last year, I'm just going to pretend didn't happen.

Denver Preview

The 10-5-0 BU Terriers starts off the second half against the 9-6-3 Denver Pioneers. Denver has plenty of talent but has struggled at the end of the first half. They are winless since a sweep of Colorado College in mid November. This game has huge pairwise implications for both teams and will have an impact where both teams are placed in the NCAA tournament and might decided if one makes the tournament at all.

Polls/Rankings

The USCHO poll  was released yesterday and has the BU Terriers 10-5-0(8-4-0) up one spot to #6 overall nationally. Here is my breakdown of the rest of the poll and weekly awards.

1. BC(11-2-1)- BU decided to throw York and company  a bone by beating UNH on Thursday night in Durham. Thankfully they returned the favor by gloriously blowing a late lead and pushing off York's 925th(record-breaking win) with a tie at PC. Apparently tying PC is good enough to move you up now.
2. UNH(11-2-2)- They are a tough team to beat especially at home. BU is just that good though.
3. Notre Dame(13-4-0)- Well this is going to get fun next year when they join Hockey East.
4. Minnesota (11-3-3)- They still haven't played anyone great as their 42nd strength of schedule indicates
5. Miami(10-3-3)
6. BU(10-5-0)- This is a team heading the right direction going into the break. It will be good to rest and recharge after a big weekend sweep of UNH and Maine. They played the toughest first half schedule in the country which leaves plenty to look forward to in the second half of the season. 30-5-0 is happening.
7. Western Michigan (10-3-1)
8. North Dakota (8-5-3)- The NoDak/Minnesota game this year is going to feature a few top 10 teams and should be great to watch.
9. Quinnipiac(12-3-2)- Might be the first team from the EZAC that I respect in awhile. They seem like a decent hockey team and their record indicates it.
10. Dartmouth(7-2-2)- They beat UVM like all decent teams should

I am still holding onto my 2 game lead over FM with MWW making a strong push the last couple of weeks. HS is collapsing like a house of cards while Raymundo has decided that his .510 winning percentage is strong enough so that he doesn't need to make picks anymore.GW's winning percentage improved with his 4-6 record last week. That sums up his season pretty well.

Weekend Preview- Way too many cats

The BU Terriers mens hockey team takes on two northern, state-school, conference opponets this weekend. They first travel up to Burlington, Vermont for a game Friday night with the 1-3-2 Catamounts. The conclude the weekend back at Agganis Arena hosting the #5 ranked 6-1-1 UNH Wildcats. These are two big conference games for the Terriers as they need atleast 3,if not all 4 points to remain in the top tier of Hockey East.

First, BU travels to Burlington, Vermont for an away game at a tough place to play in the Gutterson Fieldhouse. BU won both games up there last year with the second being a late comeback and OT win. Last year's Vermont squad was one of the worst in Hockey East history and only recorded 7 points(3-23-1) in conference on the year. This year's squad seems to be improved despite some early departures such as Sebastian Stalberg. They have already grabbed 4 points and are over half way to last year's total only 6 games into the 27 game conference schedule.  Their lone win this year came at home versus PC two weekends ago and they have scraped together ties at Merrimack and at Lowell. Their leading scorer is senior forward Chris McCarthy who has 4 points in 6 games but they have an even scoring attack as 13 players have recorded a point for them thus far including former BU recruit Robert Polsello who has put up a stunning 0-1-1 line in 6 games thus far. UVM seems to have solved  their goalie issues from last season in freshman tendy Brody Hoffman. He has posted a solid statline (.918 save %, 2.44GAA). All he needs now is to get some more wins. Offense has been the struggle for UVM as they have scored more than 2 goals once all season and average 1.7 goals/game. It would make sense for BU coach, Jack Parker, to give freshman goalie Sean Maguire a good chance for his first win as a Terrier with fellow freshman Matt O'Connor most likely getting the start on Sunday against UNH.  This game is a must win for the Terriers and cannot be overlooked before Sunday's matchup with UNH

Merrihack Preview

The #11 BU Terrier hockey team will travel to North Andover this Friday night to take on the 4-3-1(3-1-1)Merrimack Warriors. Merrimack currently sits tied for 2nd in the conference with 7pts in 5 games played. BU sits 4th with 6pts in 4 games played. The two teams battled out all 3 games last season with BU taking 2 of the 3 games, including the last 2. This will be a big test for a young BU team as it would be easy to overlook this game with a certain game on Sunday looming in the near future. We're not blogging about that game until this one is over though and I don't see any reason to overlook Merrimack, who is coming off a sweep of Northeastern and is as hot as they have been all season.

Merrimack has had a good amount of turnover since last season especially at goalie where sophomore Rasmus Tirronen and junior Sam Marrotta have split starts. Marrotta has put up better numbers(3-1-0, .927, 2.26 GAA) to date but Tirronen(1-2-1, .888, 3.23 GAA) has been much better in his last 2 starts. This is most likely due to shaking off some rust after being suspended for most of last season for NCAA regulations.  They are lead offensively by junior Mike Collins who has posted a 5-7-12 line in 8 games thus far and has put the Merrimack offense on his back. Junior d-man Jordan Heywood and sophomore Josh Myers have put up 8 (4-4) and 7 (3-4) points respectively. The offense depends on Collins though. He leads the league in scoring by 3 points over the nearest competitor.  Forward Justin Hussar is their leading freshman scorer with a 1-3-4 line thus far.

Hockey East Pick 'EM Week 5

Here are the updated ranking through 4 weekends and I still am in the lead. This is surprising to no one but everyone is atleast floating .500 besides GW who is...well just not good.  His steadfast refusal to pick BC is something to be admired by all of us though.  Also, we have to give a big shout out to MWW who made his picks with the limited cell service he has down on Long Island due to Hurricane Sandy. Kid is a trooper.

BU moves up to #12 in new USCHO poll

The BU Terriers moved up one spot from 13 to 12 in the USCHO.com poll this week coming off their sweep of UMass this past weekend. The Terriers prepare to take on #5 North Dakota this weekend as the team will travel to Grand Forks,ND for a pair of non-conference games. Here is my take on the rest of the polls.

1. BC(38)- Still overrated but you aren't going to get bumped out of #1 when you sweep another ranked team like Lowell
2. Minnesota(3)- Struggled last weekend. Tied the US U18 team in an exhibition and the struggled to a 1-0 win over Cansius on Saturday night
3. Denver(6)- The Pioneers are still undefeated and look they will be one of the teams to beat out west.
4. Miami
5. UND- North Dakota is coming off a 3 point weekend against Alaska Anchorage at home.

Hockey East Pick Em Week 4

HS- BC 3-1. BC sweeps the weekend, LOL fans slit wrists and the crack supply per capita in Lowell doubles.

MWW- BC 3-2. I think BC can play well this weekend away from home. They won't seem mediocre and have to pull one out their ass like last weekend.
GW- Lowell 5-2. I'm not kidding I won't pick BC once this year.

Maine @ PC

QQ- PC 7-0. PC is legit taking Miami to OT twice on the road while Maine got killed at home. Easy pick here. Things will get worse before they get better for the inbreds from Maine.
FM- PC 3-0. Friars are gonna make a run at home ice and Maine looks like they may be the worst team in the league
HS- PC 2-1 OT I don't want Maine to keep embarrassing themselves on the ice but I also kind of do, as long as it's against a HE team. Diamond finally gets his second misconduct of the year as PC sweeps.

MWW- PC 3-1. PC has been playing better than Maine in every aspect of the game.

A Freshman's Guide To Dog Pound Chants

It's finally here, Terriers. The second installment of the burgeoning Dog Pound Hockey for Dummies series, all about Dog Pound chants. A rundown of the best ways to use the air in your lungs for the betterment of BU hockey, whether by supporting our Terriers or heckling the opposition. Let's get to it.

This first section will focus on all the miscellaneous chants you'll see and hear during games at Agganis. This is not comprehensive - there are chants in the original post that I didn't bother to recopy here. 

Hockey East Pick EM Week 3

BC @ UMass

QQ- BC 3-2. Close game as I am sure that Mullins will be rocking. I'll be pulling for the minutemen but it isn't ideal to be playing BC coming off a loss.
FM - BC 4-2-BC will still be rusty but UMass doesn't have offense or goaltending to compete.  By February this probably would be a 5-1 BC win
HS- NCC 4-2.  The Outhouse on the Hill rebounds from an embarrassing loss at Matthews last weekend after a very motivational prayer service by Jerry York. UMASSholes riot, predictably

MWW- BC 3-1. BC should win this one
GW - UMass 5-0. Please don't riot, UMass.

St. Lawrence @Maine

QQ- Maine 4-2. They break through with another in the win column over an EZAC school at home.
FM- Maine 3-2 Bears finally get off the schneid
HS- STL 3-2. STL looked shaky splitting a series against #12 W.Mich last week, bailed out by tender Matt Weninger who combined for 69 saves on 75 shots. Assuming he keeps his cool, expect them to top the incestuous Bears on the road.
Raymundo- SLU 2-1
MWW Maine 4-0. Maine is playing at home and I expect a win against a crappy St. Lawrence team.
GW - Maine 3-1. I've got Sullivan as my tendy in Fantasy College Hockey, let's go guy.

New polls..BU continues to climb

The BU Terriers rose one spot in the USCHO.com poll for the second straight week. They now sit at #11 overall after winning in their season opener against PC.  The Terriers continue to climb from their pre-season spot at #13. Here is my breakdown of the rest of the poll.

1. Minnesota(46)- Minnesota is the new number one. They dismantled Michigan State this weekend putting up 12 goals during the two game set. Those wins along with a BC loss leads them to get 46 of the 50 possible first place votes. They should have gotten all of them.
2. North Dakota(1)- Minnesota's chief rival comes in at number 2 by not playing this weekend. That tells you what kind of weekend the top 5 had.
3. BC(2)- I would like to know what morons still voted BC 1 after they got abused by Northeastern Saturday night.
4.Miami- Two wins and they jump up 4 spots
5. Michigan- They lost to RIT at home on Friday, but rebounded on Saturday with a decisive win. Still not a good look to be losing to Atlantic Hockey teams at home as us BU fans learned all too well last October.
