Terriers open the season with 2 EZAC victories

The 2017-2018 BU Terriers started off the season on the right start as they defeated the Union Dutchmen and Quinnipiac Bobcats by 5-2 and 3-2 scores respectively. The highlights for both games are posted below but the story of the season so far has been the strong play from sophomore Patrick Harper who has four goals in two games while freshman Shane Bowers has a goal per game including the OT game winner this past Sunday versus Quinnipiac.

NHL Draft Preview

The best offseason weekend of the year in college/professional hockey is approaching with the NHL draft taking place this Friday and Saturday in Buffalo, NY.  BU will likely have four first round picks in this year's draft with 1-3 others taken in later rounds. The four first round draft picks will be sure to be the buzz of the draft as it will most likely be the most from any NCAA or CHL team and because #BUtwitter is going to be lit. London and Winsdor(back off Keller please) each look like they could have 2-3 guys go in the first as well but nobody will touch the 4 BU is going to have and no other college program will have more than one. The job Quinn has done on the recruiting trail over the last three years has been unreal to say the least. Friday night is a night to enjoy it and make fun of all the other peasant college and junior teams with less than 4 first round picks(hint that's all of them).

Projected Draft Rankings
1. Clayton Keller- Top 10
2. Kieffer Bellows- Top 15
3. Charlie McAvoy- Top 15
4. Dante Fabbro- First round
5. Chad Krys- 2-3 round
6. Johnny McDermott- 4-7th round

Here are a few mock drafts(TSN- Craig Button, Draftsite) so people know what to expect Friday night.  Official DrunkCast Drinking Game rules after the jump!

Weekend Preview: BU/BC #robertmorris

The BU Terriers take on their arch rival Boston College Newton University Eagles for their only two scheduled games of the regular season this coming weekend. These teams could meet again in the Beanpot final (obviously) but that is far from a sure thing with BC having to play a top 10 team in the first round in Harvard. The #4 ranked Eagles come into the weekend overrated for sure but this still is the only top 10 matchup this weekend with the Terriers currently ranked #10. On top of a top 10 matchup, this is the best rivalry in college hockey where you can basically throw out the records whenever they meet. The teams, fans, coaches do not like each other no matter what front the coaches may put up when they are on camera. It brings out the best and sometimes worst in the players as they play in front of the most hostile crowds of the season outside of the Beanpot.

The Terriers come into this weekend on a bit of a heater having won three games in a row including two wins over top 10 teams in Quinnipiac and Havard. BC has gone 1-2-1 in their last four including an ugly loss to Ohio State who is the opposite of good. Despite the recent struggles, you will hear all about how talented BC is and how highly those in the media think of them. They are ranked 4 in polls despite being 10 in the pairwise rankings (which are the only ones that matter). I am not going to disagree with them that BC is talented. BC has plenty of talent especially up front and in goal if Thatcher Demko is healthy/knows where he is despite a concussion. The main point that I feel is being very overlooked is that BC has not been tested.  They just recorded their first win of the year against a current top 15 pairwise team. BU on the other hand has beaten three such teams as well tied Cornell and PC twice.  BC has not been pushed or really tested by any teams outside of Hockey East so we have no idea how good they really are. BU has played the top teams in the ECAC (Harvard, Cornell, Yale, and Quinnipiac) and Michigan along with PC. BU has been through a ringer of a schedule up to this point while BC kicks over tomato can after tomato can to easy victories.  To make this point clearer, lets take a look at two teams below (hint BU is better than both of them):

Team A: 4.15 goals for/game, 12.7 shooting %,  *QWB(Quality Win Bonus) .0034

Team B: 4.36 goals for/game,  12.5 shooting %, * QWB(Quality Win Bonus) .0036

*It is what it sounds like. It is a bonus factor into pairwise for beating good teams(BU's is .0112 best in the country)

Which team would you rather be at this point in the season?

Weekend Recap: Terriers tie twice with PC, continue to improve

The BU Terriers continue to improve as the season rolls along battling to two ties with the #1 ranked Providence College Friars this past weekend. The Terriers fought back from deficits in the third periods of both games as they failed to score in either of the first two periods of either night. The Terriers knotted it up on a late Ahti Oksanen goal Friday night after trailing 1-0 for over a period of hockey with a majority of that spent short handed because the refs got a little whistle happy. BU freshman Charlie McAvoy was thrown out(and later suspended) for a hit on Brandon Tanev midway through the third. BU killed the two 5 on 3 powerplays though and gave themselves a chance to tie the game which Oksanen eventually did for them. They show an unbelievable amount of fight just to stay in the game down two skaters as Nik Olsson left the contest with an upper body injury. It was definitely a hard earned tie for the Terriers who even had chances to win OT as well.

On to the McAvoy hit, it was definitely a borderline hit and most likely a (minor)penalty. However, I do not think it was warranting of a major penalty. It appeared that Tanev dropped his head at the last moment, most likely when McAvoy was already committed to the hit. The major point of contact appeared to the be the shoulder and body but since Nate Leaman whined about it after the game, the conference felt obliged to respond and handed down the suspension. Leaman really is becoming more unlikeable the longer he is in the league.. Take the national championship game last season out of this and he is still creeping up there as whiny as all the other annoying coaches in the league(York, Dennehy, Sneddon etc). You aren't allowed to call a borderline hit "one of the worst I have seen" when your guys are taking cheap shot swings after the whistle all night long. Regardless of whether you are getting away with it or not, you are certainly not in a position to criticize a kid like McAvoy for trying to play hard and physical between the whistles while your goons are waiting to take their shots until after the play ends.

With that said, I felt like Quinn would have benched McAvoy on Saturday for a few reasons anyway. First, McAvoy is a 17 year old freshman and sometimes they can benefit from watching a game from the stands. I know AJ Greer said this just last year when he was a healthy scratch for a game. Second, he took a bad penalty before the hit that got him thrown out while responding to a cheap shot from a PC player(one of many). You still have to keep your cool there and can't take a penalty to go down 5 on 3 for a full two minutes even if it was referee assisted. Third, Brien Diffley definitely has earned the right to get some ice time with his play last year and earlier this season. There are going to be injuries throughout the year and Diffley needs to be ready to play.

Guest Post from @BurntBoats: BC Misses Cavanaugh

Editor's note: You can follow/tweet at the author of this wonderful post on Twitter (@BurntBoats).  If you have any comments or disagreements with that he said feel free to tweet at him. If you're from North Dakota/Newton, you will probably bitch at us because your reading comprehension is lacking which is fine too because we agree with 100% of things that shed a negative light on BC Hockey/this post.

Hey again, internet pals, thanks to BSRS for continuing to let me, @BurntBoats, use their site to say things longer than 140 characters with guest posts. So let’s have at it:

If I were to walk up to a random BC hockey fan and tell them Mike “Cav” Cavanaugh is a very good college hockey coach, I would be met with thorough agreement. If I instead said it appears the Eagles program significantly misses “Cav” I would probably be told I was stupid, and then I would feel bad. Alas, I will try to fight on, and explain why I believe both of my above statements are true.

Taking a quick step back, your average college hockey program has a head coach, an associate head coach (which is a glorified title for top assistant coach) who focuses on either the defense or the forwards, an assistant coach who focuses on whichever of the previous positions the associate doesn’t, and a volunteer goalie coach. A quick look around the league and it appears to me that
10 of the 12 Hockey East schools have this format for their staff.

One of the two schools that differ from this is UML, which does not have a volunteer assistant position so the (young/virile) head coach has primary responsibility for the forwards and one assistant takes the defense while the other handles the goaltenders.

The other, as you may have guessed, is BC, but has only been in this situation recently. Until late spring 2013 BC had –remarkably – gone nearly a decade without a change in their staff, Jerry York was the head coach, associate “Cav” handled the forwards, assistant Greg Brown coached the defense, and volunteer assistant Jim Logue was in charge of the goalies.

Hockey East Pre-season Predictions

Since Hockey East Media Day is approaching and everyone and their brother is releasing their Hockey East predictions, I figured I had to release mine as well. While making predictions before the season starts usually just leaves you open to look like an idiot, I'm actually smarter than everyone else since I correctly picked BU to win Hockey East last year(and I look like an idiot most of the time anyway). The coaches' poll will come out at media day next week as well and probably be dead wrong per usual (they picked BU to finish 6th last year). Then people wonder why Quinn has such an easy time getting guys on the recruiting trail. It's pretty easy to outsmart a bunch of guys who thought last year's Northeastern and UNH teams were better than BU.

1. BU- Easy choice once again. They are the deepest/best team in the country on defense. They return all 6 of last year's dmen and add a future first round pick in Charlie MacAvoy and a solid add in Shane Switzer. They return Ahti Oksanen and Danny O'Regan up front while adding two 2015 second round picks in Jordan Greenway and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson. They also add Robert Carpenter and Ryan Cloonan up front where they should be able to contribute to the bottom 6 forwards right away. Connor Lacouvee and Sean Maguire are going to tweet weird things and stop pucks all season. That's what every fan should want in their goalies. No good goalies are normal. Freshman Max Prawdzik seems capable to push them for time if they struggle as well.

2. Lowell- They return basically same team from last year which just missed the NCAA's. They only lose two D from their lineup and no forwards who contributed at all. The problem would be that Kevin Boyle is still their goalie and his 5 hole will probably still be wide open anytime a guy gets to the net.

Terrier Hockey Offseason Recap

A lot has happened in the last month or so of the offseason of BU hockey with more still to come later this summer.

1. Now former Terrier goalie Matt O'Connor has had a busy month of May as he has graduated from BU(in 3 years) and signed a two year entry level deal with the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa always seemed like the favorite for the Toronto native as he could go there and compete for playing time right away as well as play somewhere close to his family. Congrats to Matt on his new deal and best of luck moving forward.

2. Charlie Coyle, Nick Bonino and Jack Eichel showed the world what BU hockey was about at the World Championships. All three Terriers played pivotal roles on a team that took home Bronze over in Prague. It was certainly great to see them all contribute and help lead their country to a medal. Eichel definitely proved that he belongs with NHL talent throughout this tournament. This doesn't mean it's a sure thing he is leaving BU since there is NHL talent throughout the BU roster but no fan with a functional brain can fault him if he did leave for the NHL.

3. BU received commitments from Brady Tkachuk and Max Prawdzik. Tkachuk is the youngest son of former Terrier and NHL star Keith Tkachuk. He is slated to play for the USNTDP the next few seasons and will most likely arrive on Comm Ave in 2017. He was drafted by the London Knights of the OHL where his older brother just committed to play but it appears that many people believe he will keep his commitment to play for the Terriers. Prawdzik will be arriving at BU this fall to join the competition in net along with sophomore Connor LaCouvee and redshirt junior Sean Maguire. It will be an open competition in net as none of the goalies have started regularly at the NCAA level. Maguire has the most experience and would be the favorite in my eyes but it all depends how well he recovers from taking a full year off.

UNH Preview, A Chance for Hardware

                                                          Photo from Terrier Hockey Blog

The Boston University Terriers have a chance to win their first Hockey East Regular Season title since the 2008-09 season this weekend as they begin a home and home with the University of New Hampshire No Hardware. The Wildcats have struggled throughout the season and their 10-16-2 record shows it. It appears the biggest problem with Dick Umile's Wildcats is their inability to keep the puck out of the net specifically in the second and third periods.  They have allowed 80% of their goals against in the second and third which is not good to say the least. Their best goalie has a .900 save percentage which would be good enough for 14th best in Hockey East if he played enough minutes. Needless to say is the BU revenge tour needs to continue to roll against an opponent who they should dominate both nights. New Hampshire has 6 competent players in their lineup with Willows, Downing, Poturalski, Kelleher, and Thrush up front and with Matias Cleland on D.

As for BU, UNH doesn't have the defense or the goaltending to contain the Hobey Hattrick Line(Erod-Eichel-O'Regan) but I would expect big weekends from some of the secondary scorers. The second line of Oksanen- Baillargeon- Hohmann is clicking right now getting on the board in the last 3 games. I would also expect a big weekend from Brandon Hickey who has been great as of late for the Terriers. He may have the best one timer from the blue line in the league. BC can have Hanafin, I'll take Hickey, MacLeod, Fortunato and Diffley.

Now enough about how much UNH is embarrassment to Hockey East and how much better BU is than them.  What does BU need to do to clinch the Hockey East Regular season title this weekend?

Weekend Recap BU ties Union without Eichel

BU battled to a 3-3 tie with defending champion Union college on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. BU was without the service of freshman phenom Jack Eichel was given the day to rest after returning from World Juniors earlier in the weekend. The rust was evident defensively as the three goals was the most BU has given up since 11/25 and only the 4th time all season that they have allowed more than two goals. BU got goals from AJ Greer, Nikols Olsson and Evan Rodrigues in the tie but special teams let them down as they were only 1/7 on the powerplay while also allowing a shorthanded and powerplay goal. The shorthanded goal is definitely one goalie Matt O'Connor would want back as Daniel Campini did not even get a shot off but the puck slid 5 hole.  Rodrigues' powerplay goal tied the game with under 4 minutes remaining and was crucial for BU in getting the out of conference tie.  The Terriers return to action next weekend against 2-11-1 Wisconsin.

I couldn't agree more with the decision from Coach Quinn to rest Eichel after his return from World Juniors. Eichel had played 4 games in the last 7 days on an international stage so while other schools rush their guys back *cough BC cough, Quinn definitely did what was best for Eichel and the team long term.

There was some chatter on twitter after the game about how the ECAC is a stronger conference than Hockey East this year because 2 of BU's 3 losses this season have come to ECAC teams while some of the top ECAC teams have not lost that many games in conference yet. It's just another attempt by ECAC fans to make the "we're good too" argument to Hockey East aka their big brother. The facts fly in the face of this argument throughout history (12 national championships from current HE schools to 7 for current ECAC schools) and this season. In 2014, Hockey East teams have a .569 winning percentage out of league while ECAC teams have a .505 winning percentage. Strength of schedule also favors Hockey East as they hold a .5147 to a .5121 advantage in this category as well. The ECAC may have the last two national champions and the league is improving but let's stop pretending it's in the same league as Hockey East because it's not.  Harvard and Quinnpiac have been good teams thus far this year but overall the conference is not on the same level as Hockey East and Union tying a BU team without their best player doesn't change that.

This Week in #DISRES9ECT

- First there was "news" coming out of Canada that Jack Eichel would leave BU to go play for the used car salesmen in the CHL. It may have been baseless and completely wrong but that won't stop a Canadian "reporter" from making stuff to benefit themselves. It really doesn't get much more #DISRES9ECTFUL than making up lies because you are jealous of all the young American talent developing as of late.

In conclusion, Canada is full of idiots. Eichel is better than McDavid. That's why you were making up false rumors about him going to a Canadian junior league. You don't see any college hockey fans making up rumors about McDavid going anywhere ...

Hockey East Refs 2013-2014 Season in Review

So things get a little slow in the summer in the college hockey world so I took that time to take a look at the refs from this past season. I have opinions on all of them(mostly negative) but I wanted to see if the numbers lined up with what I was thinking. Here are the average penalty minutes called per game with a game involving each one of the Hockey East Refs. You're welcome in advance Dan Schachte.

BSRS Weekly Awards 1/21

Greg Jennings Award- given to the Terrier who best exemplifies the qualities of Greg Jennings through doin' shit and putting the team on his back. (YOU CAN'T STOP HIM).

Winner- Sean Maguire,G- The sophomore goalie played like the goalie who backstopped BU on a run to the Hockey East Tournament Final last year. Maguire seems to be over the back problems that plagued his first half as he was amazing both night this weekend. He gave up 5 to BC on Friday but anyone who was at that game, knows BC could have scored more than that. Maguire robbed Benedict Bill Arnold twice in the second period. Mags backed it up with another great game against Lowell Saturday night. While he did not face as many quality chances, the quantity was still there as he was forced to make 40+  saves. If Maguire keeps playing this well, BU is going to have a chance to win every game they play for the rest of the year.

Joe Pereira Trophy- Given to the Terrier who, through grit, hard work, and determination helps the team to victory on and off the scoresheet. Just like Joey did. (Interview can be read here)

Winner- Garrett Noonan,D- Noonan easily lead the Terriers in ice time this weekend as he was taking every other shift with only 5 healthy dmen available each night(4 after Oksanen went down on Saturday night). He has been an absolute workhorse for this team when they have needed him most. As the injuries continue to pile up, Noonan has picked up his own play along with his minutes. There is no chance he was under 30 minutes of ice time either night. Despite the recent struggles, he continues to battle every shift out there and he is a great example for the rest of the team to follow.

Hockey East Pick Em

We missed a week last week because quite frankly, we didn't care about any of those games. The Terriers are getting back to action this weekend so we are back making mediocre picks.

Standings
GW-61-43(.587)
FM- 47-36 (.566)
QQ- 65-69 (.485)
MWW- 48-64 (.429)
HS- 21-31 (.404)

Friday 1/3

Maine @ Quinnipiac
QQ- QU 4-1- Still reluctant to pick Maine on the road. This is a completely different game if it was being played at Alfond.

Dartmouth @ UVM
QQ- UVM 4-3- Dartmouth tied NU 8-8 after losing to PC this past weekend so I'm not really sure what to think about them.

Clarkson @ Lowell
QQ- Lowell 3-1- Lowell beat Clarkson last weekend and I would expect more of the same this weekend

UNO @ UNH
QQ- UNH 4-1- Taking UNH at the Whitt even though they kinda suck there this year.

Interview with Joe Pereira

Former Terrier captain and current UConn assistant coach Joe Pereira sat down with us recently and answered some questions about his new coaching gig. Can't thank him enough for taking the time to talk to us. Hope everyone joys some gems from the Bulldog.

-Photo credit to the Boston Hockey Blog/DFP

JP- You guys watching the Sox right now?

Us- Yeah of course. You a Yankees guy?

JP-Yeah, that's why I got the Jeter stall when we played at Fenway(Frozen Fenway 2010).  I was the best looking guy on the team. Somebody had to do it.

On how his coaching career got started:
I think it's something I've always wanted to do. You know growing up, prep school, and college. It's something that keeps you doing something that you love. It is so fulfilling that you get to recruit a kid, bring him into your program, win with him, and hopefully watch him play pro hockey. It's easy to sit at a desk and work 9-5 but it's awesome to do something that you love and have a passion for. Nobody is getting rich coaching college hockey unless you are a head coach.  You got to have the passion and it's a pretty neat job.

On how this opportunity arose and working for a former rival:
I really didn't know Coach Cav much. I talked to him when my brother (UMass senior Michael Pereira) played at Avon. That's probably the first time we ever talked and we had a good conversation. After BU/BC games, we always shook hands and talked after the game, say 'Good game Coach', ' Good game Joe'. A lot of it was looking him in the eye and having respect for one another. At the end of the day, BU or BC guys, for those 60 minutes we really don't like each other. You grow up with a lot of these kids so it's a little different. We joke around about BU-BC stuff but I keep quiet since he has a few more national championship rings than me. At the end of the day, we're not BU or BC guys anymore, we're UConn guys. That's the most important thing.

Hockey East Pick Em

It's that time of year where we all embarrass ourselves making picks for each Hockey East regular season game. MWW is the defending champ as he took down the title in the HE QF series last year.
Anyway here is the first week of our picks.

Thursday 10/10

#4 BC @ #11 Michigan

QQ- Michigan 4-3- Too much returning talent for the Wolverines, especially at home. I don't read much into their exhibition game loss this past week. BC will be starting a freshman goalie along with many others in the lineup. I expect some early struggles for consistency.
MWW-Michigan 3-1- See I cannot waste my good material this early in the season. Sometimes you need the foresight when and when not use the material. You cannot be blinded by the light of future chances.
GW-Michigan 4-1
HTS- Michigan 5-2 BC sucks. We all know it. They think because they watched Parker and Gears raise a filthy freshman goaltending tandem that they can start a kid named Thatcher and expect the same level of play. Yeah right. Expect Jerry to be blindsided to the tune of a 5-goal night for our new favorite sieve.

Friday 10/11

UMass @ #19 BU

QQ- BU 4-2- This will be a tight one until the very end. I think BU seals it late with an empty netter.
MWW- BU 4-1- First hockey east game of the season. Cannot afford to lose easy points
GW-BU 5-2
HS
FM

Clarkson vs #13 UNH(@Minnesota)

QQ- UNH 4-3- It is a UNH game and it is the first half of the season so I expect a win from Dick Umile's squad in this one. He might go down as the best college hockey coach to never win anything of importance.
MWW-UNH 4-1-  UNH is a wise pick in my opinion. They always come out of the gates and suck when it counts. It will happen again this year.
GW-UNH 4-1

Pre-season polls recap

Both the USA Today and the USCHO national polls came out in the past few days for men's hockey. BU, under first year coach David Quinn, went unranked in the USA Today poll and came in at #19 in the USCHO poll.

*-Represents Hockey East school

1. Lowell(19)*- The Riverhawks should be good throughout the regular season again this year but just remember what they do when it counts in the NCAA...
2. Miami(14)- Miami is another team that always succeeds during the regular season and this year should be no different.
3. Wisconsin(2)- Bucky has the most talent returning out of the top 10 teams in the country. Their success is going to be dependent on their goalie Rumpel being consistent in net for them. FYI- Wisconsin comes to BU on 10/19(only single seats/SRO available)
4. Newton Community College*- Most overrated team in the nation. Freshman goalie, 3 returning forwards, 2 returning defensemen but America believes in pirate coaches apparently.
5. Minnesota(1)

2013-2014 (3rd annual)Hockey LEast Pre-Season Awards

It is once again the time of year where the media releases all of their preseason polls. This means that fans(including us) will get all ticked off because their team is picked to finish 4th instead of 3rd(1st in our case) in the conference. While I have already posted our predictions, we will continue our set of awards that we post at the beginning and conclusion of each season. The Hockey LEast awards(2012-2013 final awards here) are who we think are the worst players and coaches for a various number of reasons including performance, team , off-ice rapping career etc. If you want to whine about it, feel free to leave a comment.

(Worst) Coach of the Year- Jerry York (BC)
-The fact that our pal Jerry hasn't won this award before is quite surprising in itself but we believe BC will suck enough for him to come through this year. It is really too perfect as the media and fellow coaches pumps up BC's hype in the pre-season polls. This is a team that is reliant on a freshman class to have success this season. Someone name me the last team that made a serious run with as many freshmen playing important roles as BC will have this year. The answer is never.  Throw in his team's inevitable failure this year and the fact that York and Co. will probably have to cover up more off the ice issues, this was an easy choice for our Hockey LEast coach of the year. Let the countdown for most career losses continue. 569 and counting...

Freshman class officially announced- Roster set for 2013-2014 season

The BU Terriers Men's Ice Hockey official roster was released yesterday with the announcement of the incoming freshman class. The class includes 9 freshmen and a junior transfer. 8 of the 9 freshmen come from New England with the 9th coming from Toronto,Canada. The full roster with line projections(my first attempt is posted here) after the jump.

BU Freshman Class Preview - Forwards Part 1

This is Part 1 of a 3 Part Preview of this year's freshman class. The other two parts will come out in the coming weeks as the class is finalized and the season approaches.
-Brendan Collier -photo credit- Jason Mastrodonato-Boston Globe

1. Brendan Collier, F, 5'9", 185-Charlestown,MA #8-(Valley Junior Warriors, EJHL, 15-33-48, 49 GP)

Collier is a local product who was a star on his high school team at Malden Catholic for 4 years. He played last year for the Valley Junior Warriors of the EJHL and posted a solid 48 point line in 49 games. This was after he posted 64 points and 27 goals in 22 games as a senior in high school. That includes the game winning goal in the Super 8 Championship game.

There was also a Boston Globe article about Collier from last October which details his success at the high school level and the transition to the junior level. Collier's junior coach, Andy Heinze, is quoted in the article as saying "He's just such a smart player, and he is talented enough to score at this level, I would expect him to do the same at BU. He is that good."

From everything you read on Collier, he seems ready for the college game due to his vision and feel for the game. He just seems like a hockey player that should contribute from the get-go this year. He could even sneak into the top 6 forwards with only 3 of the top 6 returning from last year's BU squad. I would expect seventh round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012 to become a fan favorite rather quickly for the gritty way he plays the game and put up between 20-30 points this season.

Here is a scout's take from a Carolina Hurricane prospect website's profile of Collier
"We hear this about him, he’s just a pure hockey player. Goal line to goal line, he works so hard, got a good compete level. I think he’s going to be a great college player. He’s got some potential because he just works so hard.”

Peter Chiarelli’s(Bruins GM) take: “A couple of interesting one’s, the Collier kid, [he is] kind of under the radar a little bit, but a real gritty kid.”

2013 Hatredmeter

This is the 2013 version of the Hatredmeter for each team in the conference. I would do non-conference teams as well but that would take all day thanks to certain schools(looking at you NoDak)

This post is going to focus on which teams I hate most in the conference and why. To clarify, I hate them all but it's fun to rank them accordingly. This may differ for other BU fans and probably will even with my fellow bloggers(Feliz Miguel loves UNH which is quite unfortunate, Hatrick Swayze loves Notre Dame football for some unknown reason) but that's why we have the comment function. However, my guess is that all BU hockey  fans will agree on who is going to come out of this list at #1.

*Notre Dame is being added to conference this season so there are now 10 teams to hate instead of just 9.

10th most hated team(or least hated team in the conference)- UMass- This was a fairly easy decision for me. Their fans may flip me off and yell at me when I'm in Mullins but I fully expect that and respect that from opposing fans. Former coach Toot Cahoon was a BU guy who coached and played for the Terriers. Also former Terrier captain Joe Pereira's younger brother Mike plays for the Minutemen.  Please don't mistake this for me being a fan of their program. Their program is a joke and all their fans leave as soon as the team goes down a goal. They will celebrate like they won the national championship when they beat BU in the regular season because quite frankly, that is as close as they will get. UMass being ranked least hated is basically just admitting that someone has to come in 2nd to BU in the conference this year and if I had to pick, it would be UMass. The really only negative are those jokes from Fight Mass. Last year's ranking- 9

2012-2013 Hockey LEast Awards

Welcome to the second second annual Hockey LEast awards here at BSRS!  This is one of our favorite posts of the year as we bring you the bad, the ugly, and the possibly Canadian from Hockey East. When putting this list together, we take into account the following: goals, assists, plus/minus, games played, and our personal level of hatred towards each player. We did our Pre-Season Favorites back in September but the final results differed slightly as is always the case. Enjoy!

(Worst) Player of the Year- Vinny Saponari- NorthLeastern, F
The defending champion has repeated! The former Terrier and rap star put up decent numbers this year, posting a 7-22-29 line and finishing his career with 99 career points. However, he was a -10 on the season and led his team to a last place finish with his great god-awful leadership abilities. Plus, he never shook Parker's hand, and everybody knows you can't disrespect a legend and get away with it while Bay State Road Sports is around. Eat shit, Vinny.

(Worst) Coach of the Year- Jim MadAgain - NorthLeastern
Northeastern's 2nd year head coach fended off late pushes from Maine's Tim Whitehead and Amherst's John Micheletto to capture his second consecutive WCOY award.  Madigan's Huskies lost or tied 13 out of their last 15 games, including 5 losses in their last 6, to secure a last place finish in Hockey East for the second year in a row.  For those of you keeping track at home, that makes: 2 last place finishes, 2 missed playoffs, 0 NCAA appearances, and 0 Beanpots for Madigan in two years at Northeastern. While we hesitate to give this award to a coach who repeatedly shows support for BU's own Dog Pound, his record is impossible to ignore.
